Default Diff problem, or is it ?!!

Hello all,

I am having a strange problem with my rear differentials on my Savage SS. When I hold the front wheels and turn the rear I feel a bit of resistance, followed by a clicking noise and then the diff slips !! Also it seems when I run the truck I have 10% rear power !!

I ttok the diff apart and the tranny, and to my surprise NONE of the gears are stripped or anything in either the diff or tranny !!

Any ideas ?

THnaks,

Check the set screws that hold the cup joints on the centre transmission. Tighten them up as much as they will go.

If one of them is loose, power will not be transmitted to that side of the car, because the cup joint will just spin freely and will not grip the transmission shaft.

I had a grinding / clicking noise before on my Savage X, and I thought it was the diffs. Turns out, it was dirt stuck in the diff shafts and cup joints that was grinding against the dogbones. I diassembled the uprights and C-hubs, cleaned them, and thoroughly soaked the cup joints and diff shafts with HPI Nitro Car Cleaner. As soon as I re-assembled everything, the noise was gone and if I push my Savage across the floor, it will go twice the distance as before, because the drivetrain is now more efficient.

Sorry for the long post.

It is more liely the bevel gears. Mine just went, and when you accelerate it started to slip. I had a tooth missing. The diffs may be the cause, but if you say you checked them then they should be OK. Also, check your brakes. You have the dual disk brakes (being an SS), and they sometimes click if not setup correctly.

All right, so i it possibel that my bevels wore out causing the diffs to slip ? Cause I took everything apart and did not see any missing teeth or anything else ?

When you checked your diff did you take them all the way apart and check the spider gears? In a diff you have 8 gears.

You should also check the inside of the diff case when you have it apart. The spider gear shaft will wear the plastic case so that it will move when it is torqued. This could cause the gears to slip and possibly make that noise for you.

Hi i have a savage x and have just had the same problem,i removed the rear diff and found the bevel gears had broken apart it seems that these diffs are not that strong, i have 2 new sets of 4 bevels on the way.see how long they last.

I would get the diffs that come with the X SS. They are much better, and will last a lot longer.

dont listen to the clicking, they work fine, just leave them be.

Can you take the little peice of paper out of the diff, that goes between the cup and the 43 toother? I dont have one, and it will be a week before I can get one. The diff gears seem fine, but the 13 and 43 tooth seem a bit tight, is this OK, just for a short time?

Lock up the diffs.
I have had a locker in the rear diff for some time now ,and I just blew the front gears out ,so I locked up the front also.To my suprise it did not affect the turning radius very much at all if any.
Seems with all 4 tires locked in the truck spins a quick 360 by braking the tires loose.
I will not use any spider gears from now on in either of my trucks.
LOCK EM BOTH UP!
Save tons of frustration ,money, and time.
