read engine temp w/o heat gun?
I cant seem to find any trace of where my heat gun went, and I need to check the temp on my Savages engine while I am breaking it in. I was wondering if I could use my thermocouple on my multimeter, it's pretty accurate.

that won't be very accurate b/c a conventional thermometer needs the entire tip to be in contact with the thing you want to take the temp of in order to be accurate.

My meat thermometer goes to, oops, was thinking of something else. Ill try my multimeter then, you dont even have to touch the object with the wire, you can be right next to and be accurate, so being on the head should work.

I have a Craftsman Multimeter (reads voltage, current, resistance, checks diodes, etc.) but it also has a thing you can plug into it, a thermocouple, and it will read temperature.

I've got a temp gun, but I very rarely use it (mostly just for breaking in engines). I don't think I've seen a multimeter with that option though, I'll have to check it out

Another way to check the temp of the engine is the water drop. This method won't give you the exact temp but it's still accurate enough to do the break in.
All you need to do is bring your engine to temperature and then put a few drops of water directly on the glow plug area. If the water instantly evaporate, this means you are way over 100celcius. wich is 212 fahrenheit. If the water doesn't boil at all, it means that your temperature is below 190F.
The sweet spot is when the water start «dancing» and evaporates after that. The water has to boil and stay there for a little time.
Hoping it will help.
