My brother and i both just installed STS .28 engines in our savages. when he cranks his it revs up really high even just sitting there. it stays reved up even when going. i turned the throttle all the way down but nothing happened. i tried to adjust the needles but nothing happened once again. i just want to know if it needs tuned or if theres something wrong.

That is a classic sign of a mal-machined carb. Do not try to start your engine again unless you want to see 300degrees F+ temps and burn up your engine.

You will have to call STS and get a properly machined carb, tell them your problem and they will send you a proper carb.

Of course, attack all other sources of air leaks: RTV seal the engine, replace all fuel lines with brand new ones, replace the tank with a brand new one.

But bottom line, your carb is a faulty one; I had the same problem with my D28M.

As an alternative, if you can get your hands on an Axial carb, use that in place of the STS carb and your run-away engine will cease.

is your idle gap at about 2mm?....

Even with the idle slide gap at 2mm, this engie will quickly rev to 35000RPM + at idle. 2mm open is only low spped and the engine with a proper carb will only rev to wher the Savage moves firward, but not run away.

But did they try to idle it down with the idle screw? Do they have the linkage and trim set properly?

Sorry I see where he said he tried the idle screw. Does the slide close all the way when the idle screw is adjusted most the way out?

I know I do, they are great engines for their cost. Additionally, what they put into them is what I am really impressed with. I just wish some of the other name brand race egines were cheaper (such as the various Rossis and so forth).

The 4 STS engines I have never had this problem! Come to think of it have not had any real problem with them.

I've had a hit-or-miss experience with my 2 STS engines. my forst STS engine, the D28M, had a bad carb. But my second STS engine, a D30M, runs great and is a serious powerhouse.

I got a new carb for my D28M, and now that it ceases to run away, it too runs great! I really love these engines; they are actually quite easy to tune and maintain. What I really enjoy is there power; they are a serious upgrade to the stock Savage engines and will realy give you wheelies on demand.
