I dont care spider gears or not, you need the SS diff.

alum. diff housing is a mumust in savage. and i dont understand why would HPI put the plastic housing on them.

well, my savage blew its diff after running around a dirt yard. i did not even do jumping.

oh well, to all savage owners, upgrade your diff to alum housing!!!

BTW - i am using stock F4.1, go figure[:@]

Might have to do with ones driving? Do not land from a jump with the brakes on or into the throttle. I have over 8 gallons on my diffs on my 4.6 SS plastic diff cups and have never messed up the gears in it. I did one time mess up the ring and pinion do to the bearings going bad.

i believe savage x ss comes with alum diff housing.

like i said, i did not even do any jumps, just going around in a circle on a gravel/dirt yard. i might have a faulty product. but dont matter, i will upgrade the darn thing to alum diff housing.

surprisingly the diff cups holds just fine.

i guess i just bash too hard[&:]

I also have a Savage X SS with 4-gear spiders and plastic diff. cups. No issues to speak of.

I've seen the 2-gear spiders live for along time as well...which leads me to agree about driving. Try not to land with throttle applied or brakes applied. That can chew up some gears pretty quickly.

If and when you do blow up a diff just upgrade to the 4-gear spider if it's not already in there. The alloy diff cup is cool to have, but not really required. I bought an S-25 with a blown front diff and upgraded the entire thing to alloy cup and 4-gear spiders. Might as well while you are in there.

I had the plastic diff housings as well, I have since upgraded, but I had no problems out of mine with several gallons and two engines through them. I can't see them as being bad with that kind of performance in my experience, maybe you just had a bad set from the get go. Sorry to hear that though.

I replaced the diff. cup and 4-spider gears for $15 or so. Less I think.

Ho many gallons do you have on your 4.1 Savage and do you ever do any maintenance? Do you have grease of diff oil in them? Have you ever had them out and serviced them?

I tyoo have the non-X SS kit Savage that came with the plastic diff cups. I never ever threw a spider. I have stripped teeth on the 13T/43T bevels (outer diff wing and pinion), but not once have my spiders given out

I had the opposite...never had any problems with the ring and pinion, just kept blowing the spiders. Ended up putting in ali housings and cups AND I shimmed them (I actually removed the cardboard gasket, which took the play out of them)...not sure which helped the most...the shimming or the ali parts. I also shimmed the ring and pinion while I was at it (needed to with the new housings).

IMO the most important thing is shimming (if needed).
Test whether it needs shimming by putting dif together (dry) and testing how much play is there.
