Default My Savage Wont Wheelie!!

Just broke in my Axial .28 spec1
I leaned it out till my temps got to between 220-240
any more then that and i can notice a drop in performance but my savage wont wheelie.
I read a lot about all the low end the axial has so i got 46/20 gearing to try and tame it a bit
Is that gearing too tall for wheelies or should i start looking for problems somewhere else?

20/46
wow that thing must go like stink.once it get going.

spur divided by cb = gearing
46/20=2.3:1
so try a
18t cb
46/18=2.56:1

my lrp spec3 i got
49/17=2.88:1
and i can still lift big joe's and a total of 15lbs(custom rollcage/skid/etc) of truck no problem.

That's a 2.3:1 gear ratio. I would think that is pretty tall. With the k4.6 motor from HPI and stock gearing 47/17 (ratio 2.76:1) the truck wheelies just fine. You should try to be closer to 3:1. With low end grunt you shouldn't have to go that low.

Yep, your gear ratio is way too high. You will want at least a 15T/49T combo or a 16T/49T combo if you want wheelies on command. Also, your Axial might have a ways to go before being fully broken in and leand for performance. That too will give you some wheelies even on 20T/46T combo.

Agreed...my Axial .28 and Savage X SS with 3-speed flips over backwards with NO effort on the 18/49 combo. I'm gonna try a 20T clutch bell and see if it tames the wheelies some.

If the 46T Robinson Racing steel spur is the only spur that will fit, then tri to get a 14T CB. This will get more torque to the wheels and should give your Spec1S the gear ratio to get wheelies on demand torque at the rear wheels.

By the way, can you post a sound with vid of you engine running? I want to hear what it sounds like at idle, while your are doing dead-stop full trigger pulls and some mid-RPM range sounds. I still think you Axial either might not be fully broken in and/or you have your needles still set too rich.

You can really tell from the sound? I can do that with cars...maybe I should try the same ear with my Savage. If I posted a sound of mine would you be kind enough to offer the same advise?

Tuning by sound is the PRO way to do it, no offense but temp guages are kind of for noobs. All you need to do is listen to the engine and you can get it tuned right. I have never owned a temp guage and dont plan to buy one, all of my engines have run spectacular without them. (Except for my first, TRX 2.5, two reasons for that. 1: Its a Traxxas engine[:'(] 2: I was a nub and it was my first engine) Learn to tune by sound, its much more usefull than any temp guage, unless you memorize the optimum operating temp and just set it from there....[8D]

My Axial 28 will easily wheelie with 17/47 and even taller 19/47 gearing. It even popped wheelies during break in.

Same with the .32 Axial with 19/47, still wheelied until I added the reverse module and additional servo, man what a load, but cool. Added that load to already worn aluminum clutch shoes so really no wheelies and caused the the shoes to wear even faster. So I have new Nova shoes and waiting on Mugen 1.0m springsto come in. I will be changing gearing to 17/49. Hopefully by tomorrow I will have wheelies again when my springs get in. Man that tall gearing really puts a wearing to your drive train (alot of stress) specially when driven off road.

17/47 should be the minimum gear ratio used with a Axial engine, whether it be any of the 28s or the 32.[8D]

20/46 still seems way overgeared.. Won't that just overstress your clutch??
