Default new engine carbon build up!!

hi,
i have a 4.1 savage and i run about a galon through it. today on my first tank i noticed a small lack of performanse. noticed that no more wheelies are done. i remove the head and there are many black build up on the head and brown on the piston. is it sign for too lean or too rich?
i read that too lean the engine becomes blue but from the temperature and not with build up. is this true?
is the engine ruined?
almost in every tank i removed the glow and checkking the inside i always saw the color of aluminium.this damage hapend in the last or the two last tanks. what went wrong?
other signs:
i noticed that the idle came up with a high pich sound as the tank went empty but i kept runing the savage...
the glow plug spiral is broke and twisted. also black residue on the plug.if it went lean this means that it should be white or black?

do i permanent damage the engine?
fuel 25% sidewinder

please help to understant what went wrong!!!!

many thanks

How does the engine run when you are driving it? What are the tuning cues? (I.e. amount of smoke coming out, th sounds of the engine at all RPMs, engine temps, and so forth).

Default RE: new engine carbon build up!!

hi,
thanks for the help.
it was my first tank yesterday. the engine was runing great at about half tank. then i noticed that were a small lack of performance.as a performance measure i say that beyond that point there was no more weelies.i dont have a temp gun. i always had in my mind to see smoke on high revs .
1) i saw lot smoke at high revs.
2) noticed a boghing at the gear shift.
3)sometimesw it was dificult to shift gear. the revs are not high enouth
4)i was runing on asphalt. that means a lot stress on engine .becouse it is dificult to spin the weels on that surface the engine get stresed i think.
5)the idle comes up and had high pich sound like the lean runing engine does so i richen the low needle a bit and seemed that i corected the idle problem for the moment.

thats was all.
before this tank (my first) goes empty the engine stops .
i wasn t be able to start it again so i checked the glow and saw the black piston. then opend the head and you know the rest.

i was runing rich or lean?
what can i do?

thanks very much!!!

hi guys,
i dont have a temp gun....
i am new to hobby and i am trying to find out what went wrong.is it too lean or too rich?
i cleaned the engine and fire it. it runs well. i also didnt push it to the limits like the last time....
i opened the HSN about one turn!! still runs great.
one think i can think of: i upgrade from 16% to 25% nitro. should have opened the neenle to compensate the more nitro so the engine runs cooler?
is it posible this to cause the problem?
i have compresion but with leaks..
also very litle pinch.
the car seems to runs ok. but weeling dificult[]

Run it until it won't run no more. Consider this part of your nitro engine learning curve.[8D]

Buying a temp gauge was drilled in my head time and time again before I even bought my truck. One of the most important pieces of equipment.

Looks to me like you were WAY to rich. Look at this: http://www.savage-central.com/ftopic1355.html Gives some good visuals as to what different tuning looks like at the glow plug.

Also remember that you need to re-tune your motor every time the weather changes or you change fuel. If you changed from 16% to 25% and did not re-tune I think you answered your own question.

Read this: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5174647/tm.htm for tuning tips.

I would:

1. Try to clean the motor as best you can (get all the build-up out)
2. Seal the motor to get rid of the air leaks
3. Change the Glow Plug (put in a new one)
4. Go buy a temp gun / gauge
5. Re-tune

Yes, that engie is gone. Just run the h3ll out of it for whatever life is left in that piston and sleeve. You could then do two things:
1) Buy a much more powerfule .28ci engine (like LRP, STS, SH, etc).
2) You can rebuild that engine by buying a new piston and sleve and whatever other innards need replacing.

You should be able to tell if it is rich or lean by the way it runs and sounds.

If you run Sidewinder you will get this build up with the brownish throw the engine and is why I quite running it and went to Byron![:@] If you are running the Basher blend it is even worst! [:'(] If you take the engine all the way apart see what it looks like.
