They are called head shims, and you put in what the mfg suggests for running a higher NITRO content.

You don't need to jack with the head shims on a big block engine to run 30% because they are designed to run 30%. Simply fill the tank with 30% and slightly richen up the HSN and away you go. For best performance you should drop down to a med-cold or cold plug if you aren't already using one.

You say to drop down a glow plug ,meaning?
I was running an 8 now using an O'Donnell 100.
I have no idea what that converts to...but it sure does fire up an run alot better.

I always run a cooler plug when I run 30%. Right now I'm running cold plugs with 30% Platinum.

The O Donnell 100 is a medium. The 8 is a medium-cold if it was a MC8.

It's a rule of thumb to go colder with a plug as nitro content increases.

Typically racers will run hot plugs with 30%, well, because they are racers and they want every little bit of power the engine can put out. Running a hot plug with 30% isn't recommended because a hot plug combined with the high nitro content will have very advanced timing and is at the verge of pre-ignition and/or detonation.....there's no fudge factor to protect the engine at that point. That's why a colder plug is required-it more or less retards the timing.
