RE: steering for savage x 4.6
i am also in this situation.......the stock steering servo in the x 4.6 RTR is way too weak and i want a stronger one.
It says on the HPI site that the stock SF-2 servo (#80560) has a 6.5kg-cm rating.
Im assuming i need one with more torgue.
Ive heard that people are getting the HiTec HS-645MG servo which has a 7.7kg-cm rating......Is this strong enough??
I dont really know of any other servos suitable for me on the market, if anyone would kindly let me know it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Daniel

RE: steering for savage x 4.6
what is the difference between regular servos and digital servo's???
I found a couple of cheap servo's from unitedhobbies.com
I have bought servos from there before and they were great.
I can get a 12kg servo for $7.97!!![X(]
Im just worried that a 12kg sevo is a bit too much and will drain the power quite quickly......would it??
Because i could get a 10kg servo for the same price if its better for me.
Thanks, Daniel

RE: steering for savage x 4.6
From Hitec RCD:
Q. What are the advantages of digital servos?
A-1. Instantaneous response
The digital micro processor is 10 times faster than an analog servo, this results in a much quicker response from the beginning with the servo developing all the rated torque 1 degree off of the center point.
A-2. Programmability
Using Hitec's proprietary programmer and servo test device, model HFP-10, Hitec digital servos can be programmed for, direction of rotation, center and end points, failsafe option, speed and dead bandwidth adjustment. This is great for matching sets of servos for deadband width, center and end points in giant scale aircraft applications and for reversing a digital servo when two are used on a "Y" harness.
Q. Are there disadvantages to digital servos?
A. If there is any disadvantage to using digital servos it is power consumption. To obtain the high standing torque and quick response, digital servos require more from the power source than standard servos. By using a larger capacity battery and heavy duty harnesses, you will ensure proper servo performance.

RE: steering for savage x 4.6
These are the four servo's ive been looking into:
1) http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...sp?idProduct=2
2) http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=6222
3) http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=6221
4) http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=5426
Lets set the control as the towerpro mg995 (its not listed above but the first 3 are all related with slight differences)-the mg995 is a 10kg-cm servo.
The first one is claimed to be exactly the same as the mg995 even though it is 12kg-cm. The second one which is the MG946 (12kg-cm) is claimed to be a "higher torque" version of the mg995 -- So i think the first one and the second one are EXACTLY the same. The third one seems to be the "upgrade" of the mg995 (upgrades of internal gearing and motor etc) and its 10kg-cm. And the fourth one is just in a world of its own.
The problem is I dont know if these are digital servo's or not.....I dont really want a digital servo because they use up more power. Would the 12kg servo reduce runtimes significantly using regular batteries???
I think im going to go for the first one seeing as its the same as the second one but its cheaper.....or would i be better going with the 10kg servo???
Sorry for this mega long post........I hope it all makes sense.
Thanks, Daniel

If money is an issue you can get 2 of these servos for under 20.00.

RE: steering for savage x 4.6
I just installed the towerpro MG946R in my savage. For a mere $19 shipped, it has ample torque to steer the savage . I've been using this servo on my rock crawler with great results. Only time will tell how long it will last on a larger scale truck. heres a quick vid
