Setting gear mesh, paper method.... Fold or not?
Hey guys,
Thought htis thread could be of use to everyone. For the past 2 years that I have been running nitro when setting my gear mesh I have always used a strip of paper to set the proper mesh.
Now reading other threads I noticed that some people fold the piece of paper making it twice as thick.
I just wanted to get people's opinions on which method works the best, if anything this can help others on setting the mesh.
Thanks in advance...

RE: Setting gear mesh, paper method.... Fold or not?
I use printer paper instead of notebook paper. I found that notebook paper didn't give me any mesh at at. When I use the paper I don't fold it at all. I just cut a strip and put it in. I have been doing it this way for 2 years and have set the mesh many times. I have only gone through one spur gear because of my stupidity. LOL

so printer paper, only 1 strip thick is the final decision? i just put a new one in, used fold printer paper (from Rogers ) to set my mesh... i don't wanna strip my spur gear again when i start driving!!!

I am trying to gather everyone's opinion to see what the consensus is, I have never run into a single problem using non folded printer paper, but maybe others have?
Anyway let's wait and get some more replies [sm=thumbup.gif]

I have always just adjusted till i felt a little bit of play and never had a problem. I have never used paper, but I might give it a shot.

read the sticky at the top of the forum. Paper isn't necessary, and IMO, isn't the right way to do it. you need to FEEL the play when you set your mesh. Paper just doesn't do it right. A sheet of notebook paper is great...for 48p gears...but with our 1m metric pitch gears, or 32p or 64p even, you need to feel it, the pitch is too coarse to use any paper method.

Feel lets you know if your mesh is too tight, but feel alone doesn't tell you if your mesh is too open.
All I have ever done is taken a piece of printer paper folder over 3 times and inserting between the gears, put as much pressure as I can from the clutchbell to the spur (making sure the engine is straight) and tightening the engine mount screws. I have never once blown out a spur with this method in 5 years.

Paper is just a guideline since it usually ges close. You want a little bit of wiggle when you move the cb between the cb and spur. On metal spurs I would double the paper because you want a looser mesh with metal. If your running p-lastic 1 layer should be enough.

This is what I do.
To get a good mesh, take a piece of the plastic from the package the spur gear came in (or any package from a new part) cut yourself a strip of it as wide as the spur gear. Fold the strip in half so it's 2 pieces thick and put it between the spur gear and clutchbell. Tighten all mounts. Remove the plastic and your done. Perfect mesh every time.
