Default To grease or not To grease?

ok guys i pulled my trans to fix my brakes, and fix the slipper, but i noticed that all the gears in the tyranny were bone dry, except where the clutch that's inside the gears had oil on them, but when i put it back together, should i add some grease or just leave it?

and a neat trick, I'm trying out now, is using felt for the slipper pad. let you know how long it lasts.

The gears are supposed to be dry. You could lube them up, but then I'd highly suggest you seal up the trans halves with RTV to keep dirt and other gunk out. Gunk and grease don't mean good things for your gears.

What they said, and the reason being is the grease/lube can get into the one-way bearing in the 2 speed.

Key words being "a little"...........if you must add some type of lube to the gears. I've had mine dry since day one with no negative effects that my eyes can see, but I do know of a couple of people I bash with that have put some white grease on their tranny gears, with no negative effects that they can see. To each their own though.

The grease will just end up getting flung away and off the gears in short order and probably end up messing with your 2-speed shifting. The gearbox was made to run dry, the gears are made of self lubricating materials.

I don't use ANY grease AT ALL in my Savage.

Only fluids are fuel, diff fluid, and shock oil. dirt can work its way ANYWHERE into a Savage, and grease WILL make it stick to the parts and wear them out prematurely.

are the diff housings tight enough to hold the diff fluid in that you guys use? seems like it would leak right out. I've been using grease forever and havent had probs with it. Does it seem to make the diffs last longer?

The trans is sealed up pretty good. How do I know? I just had my 3spd trans apart today and there was no dirt or foreign matter in it. Not even a speck. It was spotless.......and the trans itself is just about 3 years old and has seen a lot of dirt since it was installed. Even the gears were in great shape with no visible wear or play. I did put fresh bearings in while I had it all apart though.

Don't Use any Fluid.
1. It will just leak out
2. You will Decrease your top speed and wont run as smooth.

I run Red-Line Grease in the Tranny and front and back diffs...
Never had a problem with them...They run beautiful.

On one of my Savages, I have put in lithium white grease. No ill effects, even after several sessions of hard bashing. My neighbor has alwasy kept teh stock 2-speed in his old Savage 25, never had any lube in it. We tore it doen to service the bearings (lube the bearings with bearing lube, of course. The gears were 100% servicable, even though it had been neglected by its previous owner.

Based on this, I really cannot say if lube or no lube will hurt the innards of a Savage tranny.

I will say now that running your tranny unlubed (it tells you in the manual NOT to do so, btw) has no ill effects

I know, but sometimes I wonder about the manual. Afterall, the pages concerning the break-in of the engine just absolutely suck...idling the Savage on blocks... Seeing those insrtructions makes me want to tear out those pages and wipe my hind end with them.

I don't think the trans really cares if it has lube on the gears or not. Mine is unlubed and it looked like new. Lubing it is a personal call.
