Use some needle nose pliers. Grip and pull the spring over the nut. If you dont have a pair, use a screwdriver thick enough that it wont bend when using force. Use the end as a lever and pop it down, while pushing the shoe down with a finger.

Did washers come with the shoes? I've found that when you use the washers, the springs don't seem to want to stay in the groove on the center nut (and are are more difficult to install). I leave the washers out and suffer the flywheel wear. Doesn't seem to affect performance though.

Same here...haven't even seen much flywheel wear for that matter. For me light pressure with a small flat-blade screwdriver always works like a champ. You need to use one hand to hold the spring and shoe while you press down with the screwdriver in the other hand.

The flywheel wear is weird.....looks like some sort of pitting. I would have expected scraping.

Not sure I like aluminum clutch shoes. A lot of flash to be trimmed off fairly often.

Back to the question....as Go-To says...flat bladed screwdriver, fingers and possibly a few band-aids if you slip with the screwdriver. It's mostly a dexterity thing.
