God... So, went out with the newly half-rebuilt Sav today.. Fueled her up, started, and let'er rip.. And man did it rip.. Was great.. That was tank seven on the new engine..

Anyway, complete cool-down, next tank - STRESS.. Glow-plug fried from running rich.. OK, new one in.. Then, the same ole' c.rap started.. It wouldn't shift.. It wouldn't do wheelies either.. It was like in some annoying limbo gear, no wheelies, and screaming too high and not a lot of speed up top..

So how can I tell if the tranny is screwed?? I've taken it all apart - everytihng looks great..

Could all of this be from a burnt up slipper??

I don't want to put the 3-speed back in if this c.rap keeps up.. So I guess I'll just put the 2-speed back in.. But jeeze.., kind of dumb to have spent €100 on the dumb 3-speed..

Is there any way to test what's wrong with it - if anyhing? Or maybe it was just the slipper??...

I'll post a vid in a bit of the first tank.. Was cool..

your slipper could very well cause all that cuz it's slipping soo much that the tranny isn't getting the nessasary RPMs to shift and the enignes free rev to the moon witch isn't a good thing either, but if you didn't go WOT for more than 2 min when it was like that you should be good

i've had my slipper nut loosed off, and my truck did the same thing, so my advice is check your slipper nut and got the same thing

and changing you're plug could effect you're tune if but not too much unless its a differnent plug then you can mess up the tune a bit ie. if you go from a cold to a hot... but if it's the same then you really shouldn't notice a prefomance differance unless you get a bad plug...

but i think it's your slippes either burned out or you're nuts loose

That's why my slipper nut is loctited on, full tight......................even though the slipper nut is technically a locking nut, they do loosen up over time and when they do that, they will mess with the transmission's ability to shift.

ORIGINAL: HerrSavage

Think I figured it out..

Saw yesterday that the engine was moving when I gave gas or brakes.. I thought it must be the screws holding the engine to the mount.. But no. Just now, while installing a new engine to break in this weekend, I saw the same thing. Snooped around, and one screw from the right TVP to the engine plate was gone.. The other was loose... [:@]

I used to check like every screw before heading out, but after so many times checking screws over the years and having them all be tight, I guess I got slack..

And now I've paid the price..

Check your screws!!...

When I have the 2-speed in my hand, and rotate the spur, there's a bit of resistance. With the 3-speed, there's noticeably less.. It spins longer.. Everything seems to spin correctly, but I don't know.. I'm sick of working on this thing.. I have to work 2moro with a nice girl in a pretty formal company, and my hands are knicked up and my fingers black..

So I think I'll go the safe route and just stick the 2-speed in..

BTW, what's the stock setting for the 2-3 shift point on the 3-speed?

i think i might have found out what was wrong. my two speed was hanging up. i took it apart and saw the pawl has a nick at the tip where it locks into the 2nd gear. so i will change that and see what happens.

i check out the rest of the truck and found the front diff strip out. so with the back wheels blown out and the front diff not working and with the two speed worn you could say i found my problems. i did recheck the clutch and it's still good.

Yeah.. I might have to adjust my "screw maintenance on the Savage 'til it breaks" approach... What started as a mangled clutch-bell has turned into €100+ and 10 hours in repairs..

Got it going again though... (thank friggin' god....)

Vid in a sec..

Here she is, all in running order:

Well it's definitely nothing spectacular, running very rich and cold (180ish, 190 max at the end of the tank..), but whatever.. I'm just glad it's going again.. Will eventch put a 17T CB on instead of the 16, though 16/47 is nice for this engine and truck.. The SW is a little screamer.. I like it!!..

Stock HPI polished.. So far this engine is awesome.. I have - and like having - one of these Mach or SW engines in practically all four of my trucks..

I wonder if I could even take out the big blue carb insert? More power??

Hard to tell on a rich tank 9 and all, and in totally different trucks, but it seems like this engine winds higher than the Mach with closed backplate.. I mean, it's screamy...

And the price.... By German standards, and given that I got this back when the exchange rate was like €1 = $1.56.., well, was just stupid.. $119 at amain.. Even with shipping I think it was max €90.. A new LRP here costs €170 shipped..

I think I might buy another one.. Especially if taking the carb insert out will bring even more power.. Time and more fuel through should anyway..

BTW, does anybody know the deal on this carb? Supposedly stock settings are 2 turns on the LSN, 3 1/2 on the HSN.. But I'm sure I've had to LEAN the LSN a good half-turn -and it's still loading up at idle as if the LSN is too rich.. AFTER that short vid clip, I leaned the HSN a good half-turn, and it still never hit 200...

I have the LRP in my Muggy and LOVE it..

I do not however love rebuilding my Savage any more than necessary.. (every five gallons is OK, not more - for me..) And it's just my opinion, but the big 28's just rape Savages from the inside out.. I mean, I can see it here in my cups, and that's just from lowly Axials.. The new XL might be different, but in general IMO a Mach 427 is a perfect non-XL Savage engine.. With a 3-speed geared 17/47 and fully broken in this Savage would hang with most I think.. Anf if not the small difference in speed offered by any other engine wouldn't be worth the extra wear and tear..

you have a good point. my bud has the new mgt 8.0 and that is one big truck but every time we run he always brakes something. same with my other buds tmaxx. i have not found a monster truck that is better then the savage when it comes to being tough.
