Default savage 21 with 3 speed

hi everyone, i have the older savage 21 and was wondering if i can buy the upgrade 3-speed for it. i noticed on ebay that the pictures of the assembled 3 speed has 3 rubber plugs to change the shift points. when i buy the kit will it come with that half of the trans? or is there no way to adjust one of the gears? im kinda confused. thanks

It is kind of confusing. I had the old style transmission, but did not kit it. I did kit the newer one. You can only adjust 2-3 through the plugs. The 1-2 shift is adjusted by taking the transmission and top gear cluster apart. It is much easier to remove just the top half in the newer style case. I think you can use the old case, but you have to tear the truck down to adjust 1-2 shift point. Bud

The kit version only comes with the gears that you install into your existing trans. The "RTR" version comes assembled and includes the case. Either will work with your Savage. If you buy the kit, also buy the X style trans case BudBud mentioned....the two piece design is real nice. I think all of the 3sp assembled versions come with the 2 piece case now.

It is the new case....[link=http://www.hpieurope.com/piw.php?lang=en&partNo=87257]87257[/link]... [link=http://www.hpieurope.com/piw.php?lang=en&partNo=87218]87218[/link] one of them comes with the overdriven third gear which is kind of cool. You can gear down a little for rocket launching and still get the top speed. It is the one that you are looking at that has the higher gear, according to the Hpi site. Bud

I see that Hpi has discontinued the 87218, I wonder if it was because of this problem my Picco and I have been having...

To answer your question, they both have the removeable case top.

Having the two piece case does two things for you. First, you can access the 1-2 shift point without having to pull the entire trans out. Secondly, you can change the spur gear much faster. It's a win-win situation with the X style case.

You can leave the gearing as is for wicked low end grunt or go down to a 49T spur for a bit more top end. I wouldn't go any lower than a 49T with a HPI .21 engine.

If he has a 48, a 49 would be a lower gear or more power or slower top end. If you were talking about the clutch bell, more teeth would be less power and more top end, until you pass the engine's capacity to pull the load.

You're right. I got my thoughts and fingers all jumbled up when I typed my post.

In that case, go with a 17/47 combo. I have/had a Axial .28 with a 3spd and the 17/47 gearing and it loves it. I used to run 19/47 from time to time, but it wasn't all that good off-road.

We should get a RCU meet and greet going. It'd be cool to bash with the trucks I see online and meet their owners. Finding a central location would be tough because we are all so spread out. Maybe if the idea gets tossed around, it will turn into something...............[8D]

I have a six day weekend in the middle of October. My wife has never been to Wisconsin during the fall, it is really something to see. We had planned to go to the Rockies, maybe I can steer her east instead of west.....
