Just runs rough, won't start, stalls....I have an idea it is due to my newness during the breaking in process.

Ah, the joys of being a nitro newbie. Best advice I can give you is to breathe and just relax....it's a hobby man.

the Mach 427, Sportwerks 26V2 (both essentially the same engine) are two good, reliable, powerful engines you should be able to snag off ebay for cheap without having to change anything.
If you want to get the most out of either, though, you'll want to upgrade the pipe to one of the many 053s available. Post up what you're thinking about getting, and we'll let you know if it's crap or not. We're pretty good like that[&:]

As stated, the Sportwerks 26 or Mach 427 are excellent - and cheap - Savage engines.. You can get the Sportwerks at amain for $129.. Here, I'll even link it for ya:

I also happen to think the Axial 28 is a good engine for a stock Savage, but being that you can get the SW or Mach for $130, I wouldn't pay more than say $110 for the Axial if your LHS has it or something.. The SW and Mach are awesome high-revving engines, and extremely user-friendly/low-hassle... Mix in the low price and it's a dead easy choice..

Here's some X Dyno numbers for the non turbo .28 Spec 1S.

Axial Racing 0.280 .28 Spec 1S 1.41 @ 23,400 rpm 61.85 oz-in @ 23,400 rpm 33,400 rpm
The average hp is 1.42 and the average torque is 68.73, very respectable numbers.[8D]

I was going to suggest a Picco P3 28, but then I realized that you are new to nitro and perhaps not ready for a racing engine, so I will revise my thoughts and instead suggest an LRP Spec 3 28. Not as much power as the P3, but it tunes and breaks in easier, and will still impress you.

Wonder why they say it's a .27 for the 427?
