Bud Bud or other picco experts can you help?
Bud Bud or any other picco experts i was wondering if you could help out my brother.
He has a picco max and last night he went to start his truck and it would not crank, it was seized at TDC. He went and pulled the motor out, took off the head and e-z start and had to take a pair of pliers to turn the motor and break the piston loose. Upon loosening the piston, he felt the cylendar with his finders and no scratches. Then he put the truck back together and using the e-z start fired it up but it is still a bit tight, the motor cranks but then sticks at TDC, if he takes out the glow plug, it cranks easily, however I think his battery is dying on the ez start wand that's why it wont crank over now.
Questions:
Did he do any damage to the motor with the piston seized at TDC?
How can he prevent this from happening again?
This is very rare, it's never happened to any of us before, can anyone explain why TDC sieze occurs?
Thanks all!

Its just stuck at TDC. These motors have compression because of the pinch at TDC. The pinch loosens when you run the motor. So the more you run the mill, the more the motor looses compression. Which makes turning over the motor less of a hassel on an old mill.
You can't really prevent it, you just have to run more fuel through it.
If it happens again, take a hair dryer and heat up the motor. That will expand the metal enough to loosen the pinch at TDC.

Until he gets it broken in, it is likely that he will run into it again. If he does, just take a small screwdriver and roll the engine past the sticking point by prying on the edge flywheel using the chassis for a pivot point.
To prevent it from happening until the engine is broken in, heat the head with a heat gun until it is too hot to touch.
This seems to be much worse when the temperatures are cold outside. He may also want to have the engine spinning before he puts the glow charger on.
It is something that most of us who run Piccos in cold weather have run into and can be very frustrating. It will probably take two gallons of good fuel to get it broken in, less if you are using a cheaper fuel with poorer lubrication properties. I think Byron's Gen 2 and Odonnells have the best lubricating qualities. Bud
Editing to add that heating the head before you try to start it is what I should have said....

He may have damaged the motor. Post some pics. To prevent this from happening again, after your done running the vehicle make sure the motor is in BDC. Sounds like after the last run he didnt do this.

Bud Bud your first sentence was 100% correct about it being new with low mileage. It has about 1 gallon of fuel through it. Last night was the first cold night of the year since the fall season started; Good call on that one too!

The only thing I can add is to make sure the head shims are still in place. But like BB said its a thing of having lots of pinch when new and when cold it just gets worse. Picco engines are in the "race" category, unlike the "sports" type that generally have less pinch when new and therefor are easier to break in. The hassles of breaking in a picco are greatly rewarded once its fully broken in and tuned.

Guys this is my motor, and Roccos_van is my brother. Thanks for the replies.
I never knew any of this about the motor. It is fairly new about 2 months old and I have run a gallon or so of fuel through it. I followed break-in from the instructions and also had my LHS re-tune after initial break-in.
Last night was the 1st "colder night" of the year as the season is changing. I did get the motor fired last night only after turning the flywheel with some pliers and removing the glow plug so that the easy start could spin the motor.
From now on (cold season anyways) I will make sure its at BDC when shutting off, add some after run oil and make sure to heat up the motor before starting. Plus make sure the starter battery is fully charged for the most juice.
My brother also recommended to ditch the easy start and install a roto start.
Edit: I run Blue Thunder 20% race formula fuel & MC8 glow plugs.

I was going to pipe in with a, I bet I know what the engine problem is, it is embarrassed it is on a T-Maxx. Kinda like the insurance commercial when the car wont let people in because they have the wrong insurance coverage.

I put a easily visible paint mark on the flywheel edge with the engine at BDC. In the pic below you can see the blue paint mark I use-the engine is at BDC here. Quick and easy visual.
