Default Savage Rebuild

Hello all

I am have just bought a used savage 25 off ebay about a month ago the truck imo runs great and i have had only a few small problems with it. But i have found out that they are a few things that are not right with the truck and i want too completely pull the truck apart and look it over before i end up with a major problem with it. I have looked at a lot of old threads hoping to find one on this subject i didnt find much. And i wanted too start one and post pictures thur out the project in effort too help other guys like me that are new savage owners and need info on maintenance of there truck. I know there is a lot of guys on here that knows this trucks like the back of there hand and i think that you guys would be able too help guys like me save a lot of money by fixing things may not be right with there used savages. I will be setting up a work area today and will take some pictures of the truck before i start taking it apart.

I would like any opinions and suggestions about this thread before i start.

Some of us might even donate some old parts to the cause... I know I have switched all of mine to XL width and have some like new X differentials and axles.. Glen

You got a good platform to start with. It already has the tank guard and aluminum shocks. I would just inspect and replace fluid in the diffs. Inspect all the drive cups, clutch shoes, hub bearings. Thats most of the important stuff. Replace any missing screws. Replace shock oil.

The plastic diff cups were a massive weak point in the older savages. You should consider getting some X diffs.

There are chop shops on ebay that will sell the diff and the ez-access diff housing/bulkhead in one convenient package. Highly recommended. Makes inspecting diffs a 5 minute job with 6 screws. Just make sure the diffs are full alloy and not plastic.

Make sure you get the X diffs with X outdrives as the XL outdrives are too large for your dogbones.

btw, looks like your front right tire is mounted backwards

Dose the tires being on backwards have any kind of perforamce effects?

hhhs001 is 100% correct. It's only about $60 shipped to get the X diffs/bulkheads, and probably another $5 per shock tower to get the front and rear up to X specs. We would recommend using the old 25 style bumper braces, though, since they are less of a pain in the butt than the X ones. It makes you remove two more screws for diff inspection, but who cares!

thanks guys i am going too upgrade too the x diff i can get the housing and all for about 25 dollars each off of ebay....... if i understand thunderbirdjunkie should or have too get the x shock towers too

Is there anything i should look for in my tranmission or should i just leave that alone?

The same with the engine should i take that a part or leave it alone too it ran well i dont really have any reason to take it apart other then just maintenance.

I was plaining on upgrading my streeing while i had it apart having too upgrade my diff was not plained so i wont be able too put it back together for a few weeks my budget wont allow it so i might as well do everything i can too it while i have it apart

thanks any info is welcome

Don't bother with the transmission until you break it. Which is not terribly likely.

When you do, you can get an XL 3 speed for like 50 bones on fleabay.

And yes, ThunderbirdJunkie is a cheapskate[&:]

i beat you too it tbirdjunkie lol i just toke the cover off too see what was up as it looks too me it looks goods i not going too mess with it anymore but should there be any grease or anything in it?

As for my diff as you can see they are different should they be different i thought they where the same the one on the left came out of the rear and the one on the right is out of the front it dosent really matter i am replacing them but shopping for them they dont say if they are for the front or back so i dont understand.

As for the rest of the truck all and all in good shape i have some bent hinge pins and some damage too what i think is called the baulk head looks like it toke a hard hit or could be from me taking out a mail box the few days after getting it lol
I plain on upgrading too x baulk heads anyways so no big deal there but the hinge pins should i just replace them with stock one or should they be upgraded?

the only thing i have left is the engine dont think i am going too do too much with that unless you guys advise me other wise other then inspecting the clutch bell and shoes........

Well i got my savage back together i didnt buy any parts for it i figured i would just get it running again and have some fun blowing up my diffs. It ran great! The best it has ran yet. But about ten mins into running around my back yard i smoked the clutch it didnt look in the best of shape when i toke it apart but i didnt think much about it because i didnt have any problem with it. So now i am waiting on a new clutch and a vented clutch bell and i will go at it again.
