which is more convenient and easy to use? a roto start or a pull start?

Depends on the engine... If its a really tight engine, roto for sure.

I went pull start on mine
Had a roto start on all my nitros, but it caused me some issues (broke a con-ron on my k4.6 when it hydro-locked, and I couldn't stop it cause the damn thing got stuck on), also always having to have the battery charged I found was a hassle or when the roto start would crap out when I was out and end my running(happened a few times).
Pull start if I take my 3 nitros with me I don't have to worry about them not working

they both have plus and minus, the roto start is easy to start when cold but you have to carry extra kit about with you and unless you have several batteries you are limited to the amout of starts, with pull less kit to carry about and as much fuel as you take is ur limit. Im not gonna mention glow starters cause both ways need 1

For Break-in, a roto-start is great.

For cold weather, a roto-start is great.

For a poorly tuned or otherwise finickity engine to start, a roto-start is great.

So, if you have a reliable broken-in engine and live in a warm climate, a pull-start is fine.

Keep in mind, in cold weather you have a jacket on with pockets for your roto-start, glow-driver, etc. In warm weather, it may be a bit inconvenient to carry that stuff to your bash or race spot.

Roto-start batteries will usually last at least the duration of your day of bashing, but if they don't, it's not much different than having a pull-start string break. Either way, the day is over.

One last thing....with many vehicles, a roto-start will allow you to start the engine without removing the body. Installing a body with the engine running finds you starting to drive with your fuel level already lower than full. This seems to be more of a concern with 1/10th on-road cars than MTs due to the smaller fuel tank. It's a quick re-start to if you stall a cold engine....no need to remove the body to get to the pull-start.

I prefer the pull starters, even on new Piccos or LRPs. It is just one less item to worry about keeping up. If you get your tune close, open the carb until the bellows start to expand and prime properly, normally you can get a one or two pull start. That is just not worth the hassle of lugging the roto starter or drill along in my book. This is especially true if you are hiking into a beach, BMX track or State Park etc..... Glen

I think you need to ask on a specific engine or RTR model. I bought a HPIMonster King pull start recently and the roto start was an option. I like the KISS method. The engine is so easy to start with the pull start on this model I could not imagine a need for HPIto offer a roto start option. Its more of a pain in the ass to keep the glow starter on the glow plug since the engine is mounted on its side and the pull start is from the top.

As mentioned, both have advantages. I've used both and if I had to vote, I'd say roto. I don't start anymore though, I plug.

(And this is what I carried when I used the roto if I was hiking or moving with the truck.)

rotostart for sure. I can think redcat racing nitros for not wantin to use a pullstart anymore. blister after blister after blister. screw that.

Then there is the OWB issue it can be a pain with pull, roto just keep giving that button a little push til it catches[8D]

I used to always use Roto for several engines, but it was annoying charging the battery for the roto-unit and having it die on you, because eventually all Roto-starts die or malfunction. Currently, I favor pull-start, just always have at least one extra pull start available for when that string breaks.
