Default Is it time to buy a pullstart??

Hi guys,
I think my one way bearing went today, Im running the stock Savage X 4.6 engine, the F4.6 right? My roto start just spins freely and it turns over every 10 turns or something like that. I had heard they can get very oily and slip so I took it out and it was very oily, cleaned it up, tested it with my hand and installed everything back in, same thing happened. Any pointers? Why is is still slipping if I cleaned it up? I turned it with my hand and it worked fine (yes, its on the right way), should I take it off again and try sanding the shaft a little to make it grip?
Id like to get it fixed as I am leaving home in about 15 days and dont know when I will be able to play with it again so I really want to get it up and running to enjoy! I will probably be getting a pull start because im fed up of the rotostart...

look for a crack in the OWB, if you see one then its toast. You can try cleaning an oily one by soaking it in rubbing alcohol or something similar. Your LHS will probably have a new OWB if you need one. Judging by the number of posts you have I would assume you know not to try to start the engine if it is flooded? That will kill a OWB very quickly. If your motor has lots of compression you can loosen the glowplug while you crank it over and just tighten it once it starts. Also i have found that if you heat up the back of the engine with a hair dryer the OWB will grip a lot better if it is kind of worn out. Good luck!

You'll want to replace the one-way bearing shaft, too, since the slipping one-way chews up the shaft, and then you'll rip your hair out wondering why you keep going through one way bearings.

1430 is the correct no for the owb if you have an f series engine, 1428 is the pullstarter to go with that owb

On my K5.9 the OWB was slipping to no end and it was a worn backplate bushing that was the root cause.
Fixed for free with a small rubber O-ring on the shaft.

Since I'm not allowed to post my website links...
I'll just copy paste it.

Here's something I did to kill two birds with one free stone. 8-)
I went out to run the XL and could tell it had an air leak by the way it was running and not responding to richening the needles.
So I leak tested it with soapy water and found nothing..
I suspected the rear backplate bushing because I've known it is worn out and the rotostart shaft is kind of floppy where it enters the backplate and OWB.
(This was the cause of the OWB not grabbing even after cleaning it out.)
So I checked it out and sure enough there was the leak.

Here's the fix - just find a small O-ring that fits tight on the starter shaft, lube it up with some silicone grease or green slime and you are good to go!
I have a mess of O-rings laying around so this cost me $0.
The extra plus to this is the OWB grabs 100% of the time now because the O-ring keeps the shaft running true in the OWB.
Before the One Way Bearing would only grab about 20% of the time because it was cocked and not runing true in the needles.

Here's a pic of the O-ring installed on the shaft.

Yup, you want the O-ring on the engine side of the hex.

I tried it and no go, its got a crack so I guess it dead. Will get a replacement! Do these things just randomly go sometimes or did I do something wrong? My engine wasnt flooded, or so I think!
Thanks
