HPI SAVAGE XL BUILD (Engine?)

Oh Boy here we go. I have a lot of questions for you guys. I am building a Savage Xl. Thats right a savage XL does not come in a kit so I am buying a Savage ss 4.6 kit and the coversion parts. I love to build and money is not an issue. Here is what I have ordered. Please let me know what I am missiing or what you would like to see different. I am also trying to find the best engine for this beast. Maximum power and spead. Maybe I need to buy one of those custome engines????? If money was not an issue what engine would you put in this truck?????<table cellpadding="0" width="100%" border="0" style="background: #eeeeee; width: 100%"> <tbody> <tr> <td style="border-right: #e0dfe3; RE: HPI SAVAGE XL BUILD (Engine?)

i would go with the HPI k5.9 or an o.s. .30vg for reliability.
or if you really want beast the cen 7.7 but reliability may not be there.

RE: HPI SAVAGE XL BUILD (Engine?)

say whatt?????

i've heard nothing but bad things about ALL of those engines, k5.9 air leaks bad bearings, bad pistons, runs hot, poorly designed in general.... OS 30, low top end, decent TQ but was again choked, the 7.7 is a convertend heli engine and is short on the top end heavily
the k 4.6 and the axail .32 will suffer from many of the issues that the k5.9 does....

engines that people are recomending and re recomending the LRP .30 with a 053 pipe, or a picco .28 with a 086, modded for even more power...

as for running max power, people have had issues with killign the 3 speeds (thinner gears) under high power doing speed runs with big tires, so the 2 speed tranny has been proven more durable and will achive the same speeds

thats the advice you will hear for max power and speed without saying cancel the order and buy a flux

the lug

LRP is associated if i'm not mistaken, and i don't do anything with associated engines. so i don't know that much about them.
as for HPI or really any engine, anyone would be foolish not to go over everything and make sure it's sealed before they even start it for the first time..
however i've never had problems with HPI or O.S.
you don't have to roll up and knock someone elses recomendations. just make your recomendation and call it even.

RE: HPI SAVAGE XL BUILD (Engine?)

I am concerned about the power recomendations that have been published. I cannot tell if there really is a standard for what HP an engine puts out or RPMs. Its like Stereo wattage. A Krell amp puts out 3-4 watts but a will blow your ear drums yet a 500 watt no name amp sounds like crap. I really like OS engines so I may just go with the OS engine have had a lot of luck with them. However I am very enticed by the 5.9. Which would you run between the 5.9 and the OS. Remember I am already going to have a 4.6 on hand with the kit.

well, hp and rpm stated on manufacturer web sites are unloaded ratings and is not what you get when you put it in the vehicle under load. the o.s. .30 i've seen in a savage and will flip it instantly when you nail the throttle. as far as the 5.9(.36) is pretty gnarly.
however ,have you thought about getting the 4.6 modded?
i would venture to say it may very well get you as much as any of the engines mentioned in the thread.
1 company that does modding for $125 is www.rbmods.net
i think this would be a cheaper way to go with a lot more punch than you would expect.

As you have read the car is being set up as an XL. so I am thinking the engine should be big. However which engine is stronger the OS .30 or the 5.9.. Have you seen a 5.9 flip a savage like you have an OS .30?

a buddy of mine right here in town bought the .30 when they first came out and i've watched it as well as done it myself with his savage that i sold him.
as far as which is stronger i would say the 5.9. but more reliable would be O.S.
as far as a 5.9 flippin it. i watch them run but never seen anyone flip it intensionally.
i just now noticed what you wrote.

My vote is for picco, for all out power. The os might have better low end but top end is what counts in my books

Buy one of my Clockwork Modified Picco 28's.....Way more power and speed then any of the engines mentioned so far... Yes it costs a little more, but if you after maximum power and Speed then look no further !

Bigger isnt always better when it comes to nitro engines.....My vote goes to a modified picco with ercm pipe.

Why anybody is still recommending the K5.9 after all the trouble the limited membership here has experienced is beyond me. Here are some old threads, I quit saving them.

Supertib does a really nice job on his engines, he can build you a dream Picco, I have had the pleasure of running several of his engines, great stuff. The LRP 30 is good, I was not an LRP 28 fan, but in the Savage, the 30 is a good choice. The 28 really did nothing wrong, I was just power hungry.

Thanks Big Bud. I have squashed the 5.9 idea. I am buying the LRP 30 and sending it to RBmods for some added Juice. I figure he can mod it up pretty well. I will run the 4.6 as a beater engine.</p>

Do you mod any larger engines.Your video is of a car that probably weighs half of what an XL weighs? Ilike the low end to be good.Lookin for 4.3+ HP and 39,000 rpms? Thoughts?

$125
copied from the site:

Up to 50% on the bottom and 15,000 on the top of smooth lineal power, I also Black Oxide the crank for rust proofing and add a ABEC3 stainless Steel Bearing in the front of common engines. My mods will not be beat.

The Picco 28 is more powerful then any of the larger engines... LRP makes really big HP and RPM claims on their advertising, however those claims are are nowhere near accurate..a more realistic number would be 1.8 HP and 30 000 RPM....The LRP 30 has decent torque, but really lacks RPM...the Picco makes similar if not better torque and a whole pile more RPM........If it makes you feel better tho, if the stock LRP 30 is rated at 4.3 HP and 39 000 rpm, the my modified Picco would be 5.5 HP and 49 000 rpm....( however my number is just as fictional as LRP's )

I even have a dyno !

however I don't think it would be much of a comparison to be honest...Nothing wrong with RB Mods, its just the LRP 30 is a Taiwanese Sport engine, the Picco an italian race engine...the Picco has larger ports and is capable of making alot more HP...Give RB a Picco 28 then it would be more fair !

I understand. However that would not be a fair comparison.I asked him to help with an engine that would be reliable and not need alot of tuning everytime I drove the truck.</p>

The LRP is likely a little less sensitive to tune and setup....which may be the best for you anyways.....However if your after the most power and speed possible then the Picco is the best... The Picco's do tune good, but they are definitely not quite as forgiving as the LRP....Either way you would be happy with both engines, I am sure the RB Modded LRP is going to rip !
