Default Problems with AFPD on new PC

I recently built a new PC specifically to run AFPD with High Performance.

I have an ASUS P5N-D mobo with an Nvidia Chipset, Intel Quad-Core Q6600 processor, 4Gb Corsair Dual-Channel memory, XFX Nvidia Gforce 9800GTX+ PCIe video card with 512Mb ram, and a 1Tb WD SATA HD. I have a Thermaltake 650W power supply. I installed XP Pro 64bit OS and everything is running great. I was able to install AFPD and the 1.11 patch. I have all 5 Addons, but I tried to install TrueScale Addon 3, first, and it did not Autorun like the AFPD CD did. I specifically installed the 1.11 patch because I knew it was compatible with Addons 3-5.

Is there something that I am missing?

Default RE: Problems with AFPD on new PC

I have been running AFPD, with the 1.11 patch, and all the Addons 1-5, on my old P4 machine, without any errors but just slow performance.

Hi Rich,

Your installation sequence should always be main disks.....addons (in number order).....patch. If you have applied the latest patch before the addons, it might cause some problems and you might need to do a complete uninstall and reinstall.

If any addon disk does not autorun, it could be a bug with the installer. In this case, just browse the disk content and double click on setup.exe

Default RE: Problems with AFPD on new PC

Mike - I tried Uninstalling AFPD and ReInstalling as you suggested. First the Main Program and then each Addon, 1-5. Finally, I installed the 1.11 Patch. As soon as I go to Calibrate, all the bars go crazy. I tried Uninstalling and ReInstalling just the Main program, with No Addons. Same problem. I am using the same JR8103 and same USB cable that I am using on my old 1.8 Ghz P4 machine with 768Mb Ram and Nvidia 7600 PCI card.

Default RE: Problems with AFPD on new PC

Did you install the latest video card driver for the 9800GTX? Did you get any error message from AFPD? Did you do a proper controller setup and channel assignment?

Pls post your tm.log file which you can find in the following directory

C:\Program Files\IPACS\AeroFly Professional Deluxe

You may open the file with a text editor like word or notepad. Just copy and paste the entire content into your post. Thx

Default RE: Problems with AFPD on new PC

I will post that file when I get home.

I always install the latest graphics card drivers when I buy a new graphics card.

I was wondering if Vista 64bit would be a better choice than XP Pro 64bit. It does not matter to me which OS I use as long as my Hardware and Apps still work. I built this PC to improve the performance of AFPD and also to run WinTV as a PVR. I have a WinTV-HVR-1800 PCI-e x 1 card.

Default RE: Problems with AFPD on new PC

Regarding his Aerofly Pro Deluxe flight sim, there is a Main Program, 5 Addons, and a patch that you have to install, after the Addons are installed. I started by installing the Main Program and then the Patch. When I launched the program, I had to configure the Controls so the Control Surfaces were going in the correct direction. Once I did that, I had to Calibrate the Tx. I have a JR8103 which I have used with AFPD before, without a problem. When I got to the Calibration Screen, everything looked normal and I moved all the Sticks, Switches, and Knobs. When I clicked on OK, all the bars, for each channel, started going crazy. I moved each Stick, Switch, and Knob, and as I did, the bar for each channel became Stable. When I was done, I was able to fly. I installed each of the 5 Addons, one at a time, and each time, the program was Stable. I finished by installing the Patch, as requested.

In a Windowed Mode, I was seeing Frame Rates as high as 1500. The Biplane I was flying flew like a Rocket. I had to slow down the Throttle. I then changed the Resolution from Windowed, to 1900x1080 60Hz. The Frame Rate dropped to 600 and everything worked fine.

The only problem I found was that as I worked with AFPD, my Sony Bravia 46" HDTV would suddenly go Blank, display the Bravia logo, and then return the display again. It did this Randomly, and even with AFPD shut down, and the USB cable disconnected, it did it, on occasion, while we were working with WinTV. It had never done this before, while using the Cable Box or the DVD player. At first, I thought it was the Graphics Card, changing Graphics Modes, but the HDTV goes blank for sometimes 30 seconds. It seems that when I drag the Mouse around, the image reappears sooner, but I turned off the Screen Saver and the display still randomly blanked out.

Aside from the occasional reset of the HDTV display, the program worked fine.

Why is it that I cannot change the position of the Sun or switch from Blue Sky to Overcast? Those features seem to be Greyed Out, no matter what scenery I choose

Default RE: Problems with AFPD on new PC

I forgot to mention that I had originally installed the latest Nvidia driver when I first set up the PC. I just checked and it is 182.50 for the XP 64bit OS. Now when I installed the program, successfully, as outlined in the previous post, I first installed the Main Program and then the 1.11 patch. I checked to see how the program worked after each Addon was installed. I reinstalled the 1.11 patch after all the Addons were installed.

I did notice, today, that while I was running AFPD, the HDTV went blank again . It does not seem to do that when I am running any other program. My PC case has a 280mm Cooling fan on top and a 120mm Cooling Fan on the Front and Back.

I have a similar hardware setup as yours, without the TV. But I am running XP Pro 32 bit. Just possibly, your problem is with XP Pro 64. Remember it was criticised quite heavily for failing to run a number of 32 bit applications. I can't give you references now.

I would be interested to know how your memory utilisation is going with a 64 bit system. I estimated that the runtime image in RAM of any 32 bit data or code would have to be doubled when run under a 64 bit system. So my guess(!!!!) was that AFPD run under XP 64 would need twice the RAM it uses under XP 32. As my mother board would support only up to 8 Gb of RAM, I didn't see the advantage of a 64 bit system over a 32 bit system with 4 Gb of RAM. But note, 4 Gb of RAM is reduced to 3.25 Gb of usable RAM under XP Pro 32. I also thought that the speed advantage of the 64 bit OS running on Quad processors would be lost in conversion costs from converting 32 bit code instructions to 64 bit instructions at runtime.

All these are my assumptions. It would be great if you could prove or disprove them.

The Wildberg multi-pane scenery is fantastic on a large LCD screen. I live in it!!!!

Best wishes
Mike

As far as your AFPD setup, it looks like it is running fine. On your question about some greyed out graphics settings e.g clouds, etc, these features are only available for 3D computer-generated sceneries, not photosceneries. Sometimes, blanking can be caused by cabling issues. How long is your cable from the PC to the monitor? Are you using a DVI or VGA cable? Transmitting full hd resolutions (1920x1080 ) using a DVI cable can cause problems. Have you tried using a normal VGA cable, using the VGA input of the monitor?

Default RE: Problems with AFPD on new PC

When I first built this system, the only corner I cut was with the OS. I had a Windows XP Pro 32bit CD from my Dell System. Because of the 1Tb SATA HD, I had to create a Floppy Disk, with a RAID/Mass Storage Device driver, from the ASUS mobo disk. I kept getting a random BSOD referencing the Mass Storage Device driver nvtgs.sys. The only other OS I had was a Microsoft XP Pro 64bit CD. It has been Rock Solid in every other respect.

I have been told, by other IT friends, that there may have been enough differences between the Dell XP Pro 32bit disk and an MS XP Pro 32bit disk that would account for the incompatibility between the Dell disk and my system. I am not sure if I should buy an MS XP Pro 32bit or Vista 64bit disk.

The system is running very stable right now. I am using a little over 1Gb of Ram, according to Performance Manager, when AFPD is running. I have been averaging 600fps running at 1900x1080 @ 60Hz,

The only glitch is that every 8 minutes or so, the HDTV goes blank, the power light is still on, the Bravia logo displays, and then the display returns. I am not sure if it is the Graphics card that is doing that or the HDTV, however, it only seems to do this when AFPD is running. I did have it happen a couple of times when I was running WinTV. It never happens when I am just watching cable TV. The PC is running DVI to HDMI cable to the TV.

The last time I loaded AFPD, last night, I did not experience the display kicking out as often as it did the time before.

Default RE: Problems with AFPD on new PC

I am using one 6ft USB cable extension and the AFPD cable is connected to it.

I was under the impression that I could only get HD resolutions if I used DVI to HDMI. When I was using my Nvidia 6200 card in my P4 machine, I had to go from DVI to VGA on the TV and I believe the VGA port only supported 1300x??. I called Nvidia support and they told me I needed a 7000 series card or better to get HD quality and use a DVI to HDMI cable. I put an 8400GS PCI card in my P4 and I have been running DVI to HDMI without a problem, for 6 months, at 1900x900 res.

Thanks, I might have an answer to my question.
AFPD running on your system uses "a little over 1Gb" according to the performance manager.
AFPD with everything set on max quality with the Wildberg multi-pane scenery running alone on my system uses just on 400 Mb according to the performance manager.

Don't take this as gospel yet; I need to do more tests

Best wishes

Default RE: Problems with AFPD on new PC

Mike - I tried hooking up a DVI to VGA cable but I can only use 1280x1024 res as the Video card sees the HDTV as an Analog device. The display looks much worse than it does with the DVI to HDMI cable.

Mike - Is it possible that since my Desktop res is set to 1600x900 and AFPD is set to 1080i that it is triggering the screen blanking?

Hi Rich, I don't think so. I am not sure what the problem could be but your AFPD setup is perfect.
