Extra Choices
If you are looking for an Extra kit in the 80" range I would consider the CA models 27% Extra. I have built the Midwest and currently have the CA under construction. Reasons are as follows:
1. Midwest wing is in one piece vs CA on a wing tube (easier to set incidence and transport).
2. Older Midwest kits had a flat stab and that was replaced by an airfoil shape however the fin and rudder may still be flat. CA does all flying surfaces airfoiled.
3. Midwest has built up surfaces vs the balsa covered foam (sheeting already done in the kit) so building is quicker and for most builders don't do this as accurately.
4. Midwest did include ABS (plastic) cowl and wheel pants (at least in the one I built) where the CA includes fiberglass ones of excellent quality.
These are my opinions. Others may have their own. http://www.marcelocolombo.com.ar/Ingles/homeingles.htm

The new Midwest kits do have an airfoiled fin and stab. They don't come with cowl and pants, so you'll have to find some on your own. They will sell ABS parts if you really want.
For the money you'd put into building a Midwest Extra, you could get a World Models Extra and be flying quite a bit sooner. I have flown both and find them to be equal, though the World Models may get a slight edge in overall performance.
The good news is there are a number of great 80" Extras out there for you to decide on. Good luck!

I second the CA Extra
It is a great kit and goes together quickly with all of the foam already sheeted.
It won't be as heavy as some of the other kits either.

Go with the midwest extra. I've been flying one in IMAC and placed 3rd with it in the Centreville contest. I have the one with the flat stab so think how old this is. Its my dads hand me down. I got a zdz 40 with a 20x10 Bambula prop and there is no bad habits of the airplane. It lands beautifully and draws a straight line with minor rudder corrections. If you go with the zdz 40 and dont like the 20x10 put an 18x10 carbon fiber prop on it and it will bring it to life.
