Best gas engine for 120 size edge 540?
I am looking for advice on the best GAS engine to put on my Lanier Edge 540T. It should weight around 10 lbs. without the engine. I have decided I want a gas engine due to my location and the problem of getting glow fuel to an island. I want this plane to have enough power to hover but not fly like a lead weight. I'm thinking the MVVS 1.60 is the smallest gasser with enough power to hover this plane. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

I've had some experience with the MVVS 160 gasser. It's a great motor, and will turn a 18 x 8 pretty well....high 7K's, anyway. If that's enough, I'd go with that because the 2.15 is MUCH heavier.
On the plane you're looking at, you may want to consider the wing loading and performance issues from adding the extra motor weight of the 215.
I'm not familiar with the Lanier 540....if the span is around 72-74", you should be fine with the 1.60. If it's 78-80, or more, forget BOTH the MVVS and go with the ZDZ 40RV.

Best gas engine for 120 size edge 540?
My experience with the MVVS is limited to the 1.6 and it's somewhat less then positive. In fact my RCS140 will out turn it by almost 800 rpm on any prop, and it weighs less. Yes it is true that the RCS is a rear induction engine so linkage is tricky and its tough to get to the needles. But it is so powerful, the first time you see 7900-8000 on a pro Zinger 18/8 you'll forget all about the problems. As far as the MVVS 2.1, is weighs almost the same as a Brison 2.4 and isn't even close in power. rcfaq.com has some good comparisons for prop RPM check them out before you buy.

Firsr Place Engines 2.4 is a great engine. I have never owned one, but a friend has, and it ran PERFECT after having 1 or 2 tanks through it. It had plenty of power for his Sig extra.

Best gas engine for 120 size edge 540?
Thank you all for your advice. After looking at several possibilities here is what I think is the best choice for me. My edge has a wing area of 1008. So these are my thoughts,
FPE 2.4) Good, light weight engine with more than enough power for my application. Better price than the Brison or Fox 2.4s when you throw in the muffler. I know they turn less rpm than the Fox and Brison but the FPE has plenty to take my plane vert. In my application I would have to add firewall spacers or build the firewall out about 3/4 of an inch, so that would add a little more weight.
RCS 1.8) Good engine, close to the same weight as the FPE after I add the spacers or build out the firewall for the FPE. Plenty of power to to make my plane go vert. The stock mount will fit my application almost perfect (no spacers or or other weight to add). The price of the RCS 1.8 is less than the FPE, even when you add the cost of the muffler and prop drill jig.
MVVS 1.6) According to some of the posts I have read, I don't think this engine has enough power for what I want.
RCS 1.4) Same as above.
Brison and Fox 2.4) Would work, but cost much more, and why spend the extra money when I can get the performance I want for less money.
So, With 1008 wing surface, about the same weight as the H9 edge, I think the RCS 1.8 is the best choice for my 120 size Edge. considering power, cost, performance, weight.
Thanks again.

Best gas engine for 120 size edge 540?
Just remember that the rcs and mvvs engines need motor mounts which weigh around 7-10 ounces.
I'm looking at the new zdz 40b which weighs in at 3.8 lbs with everything (ign, batt, switch, prop, muffler) and cost 430.00 for my H9 edge. No motor mount needed just wooden spacers.

SAL98, thanks for your reply. I missed that engine during my comparison. I looked at what it had to offer and ordered mine today. Better price than the RCS 1.8, more power and when you add all the weight of the battery, prop, and switch the weight is very close to the 1.8.
Thanks

Best gas engine for 120 size edge 540?
Nice, I just finished my engine installation the other day. my cowl is cut out just like yours. Only thing is i had to cut out small holes on top of the cowl for the mixture screws and the idle stop screw.

Best gas engine for 120 size edge 540?
I will have to drill holes for the mixture screws also. I added 1/8" ply to the back of the firewall, then added triangle balsa. I cut the bottom 1/4" ply so it fits INTO the area between F1 & F2. I drilled three 1" holes towards the rear of the bottom ply so the carb has air. This manufacture says this airplane can use "standard" servos, but I think they meant if you put a small engine on it. I am using an Airtronics radio. I am trying to figure out what servos I should run all around? Any suggestions?

We got bored with the OS 160, so we shoe-horned a 3W-24 complete with PeFa cannister into Laniers lil Edge 540... 13lbs-4ozs.. ready to fly, dry...
The baby 3W swings an 18/10 Bolly @ 8000 on pitts exhaust. With the tuned cannister were hoping for a few hundred more rpm...

Flown any of these set ups yet? The weight looks high. I am curious of the performance before I commit. Thanks for the heads up.
