Default FiberClassic Extra 2.6m

Hello all,

I've just got my FC Extra today and about to shop for an engine. I'd to put either a BME110, or the DA100 in it.

Can any of you out there have build one tell me if this plane naturally tail heavy, or nose heavy. What did you do interm of balancing...ie components arrangement.

The reason why I ask is because if it's tail-heavy - then I would go with the DA...otherwise I might consider using the new BME110 (lighter).

Thanks

Personally I would go with the DA, I know a guy who has the 40% with a 3w 150 and it was still tail heavy (older heavier style)
And i think that bme is trying to go too light and could not withstand a crash of any sort.

I don't have a Composite-ARF, but most are putting a DA-100 in them because of the length from the firewall to the front of the cowl. A 3W is a little long (1/4inch?). They balance with the DA. The BME would require nose weight or tuned cans for balance. Most are claiming this plane comes out at 24 lbs with a DA. A good strong 80 will easily fly a 24 lb plane, so it's not about power, but balance and throttle response. I hope they move the firewall back on the Composite-ARF in the near future so that I can use a 3W-100 - if CA is listening.

The BME-110 isn't yet available. Kind of hard to predict a firm delivery date.

My brother and I have 2 of the 2.6 meter extras equipped with DA 100s. Both weigh in at 24.4 pounds almost 24 1/2 pounds. The BME should be a good motor I hope to know soon. The DA is a great engine and with the DA and standard mufflers with a ZN line spinner 5 inch using the supplied rudder tray set up the batteries are mounted flat on the bottom of the fuse at just about the back of the canopy but this is to get a more 3D CG.
If you set it up properly and have everything installed and done you can use the batteries to balance to the desired CG no problems. The DA and the 2.6 meter are a great combination. IMHO

Thanks - DA100 it is then. What a nice quality plane it is.

Can't wait to fly it.

Steve

Could you tell me the a measurement from the main spar where your Extra balances. I've got one, I've flown it about 5 times now and the C of G is well forward. I wanna get it right back for some serious 3D.

Thanks

Phil

Phil,

We'll probably have one of them out Fri or Sat, I'll check it and report back. We started out at the recommended point and added a total of 8 oz under the stab to get it were it was a good compromise for precision and 3D. Then moved the batteries, but I don't remember how far back it ended up.

Point of interest about the CG. I moved mine back to where I was happy with the inverted flight, then I could not get it to consistently enter a spin (IMAC), it would just float around up there. So, I recommend you try a setup where you can easily shift the CG for 3D vs precision flying.

I'm currently working on a removable pilot figure / dash. It would be great if the requirement were the other way round, i.e. if I could add it for 3D and remove it for IMAC. Bummer !

Craig.

Hi,
Dont know if you could do this easily in a composite fuz but some of the TOC guys use a phenolic tube (old wing tube outer) in the back of the fuselage through the side and capped off each end (one end removeable)...they then add a peice of wing tube or whatever into this for freestyle and remove it for imac.
Just a thought

While I don't own one of these, I have seen enough of them setup to know...The plane is designed for the DA. The fuse is marked for the DA, and the firewall to backplate distance is setup for a DA. Power is obscene with that motor. The plane is plenty light enough, so I couldn't see a need to go any lighter. The BME is not out yet, and nobody knows how this engine is gonna hold up. The DA has been out now for awhile, and it's well known how reliable they are. Lots of reasons here, but the main one is stick with the one the designer had in mind...less headaches that way. Like one of the other posts hinted on, I think the new BME is *too* light...not from a crash perspective (because these things aren't built to crash), but from a longevity perspective. If it was as simple as whittling metal away to make these engines lighter without compromising needed stregnth the other manufacturers would've done this long ago. There is a reason they haven't, and while I have a few thoughts on that, I'll keep those to myself for the time being.

Default My Extra...

Finally got started on my Extra - fitted the wing today, assembled the empennages together with the wings to check for alignment. It's so nice. My DA100 should be here next week...can't wait to fly it.

My Extra 330S - 2.6m

...check out my site while you're there. Feel free to make any suggestion, or give me any pointers.

Default RE: My Extra...

I have just flight tested a 2.6 m. Composite-ARF Extra.
It is fitted with a 3W106 QS with two TOC style mufflers. I moved the firewall back 1/2" to accomodate the engine.
The problem is that the plane is really nose heavy.
Can someone tell me where the CG should ever be?

CG should be around the spar. Mine is just on the front edge of the spar, but I think it is still to nose heavy. Instruction say up to 1/2" in back of the spar.

How about some feedback on building the trays for this plane. I've seen as many different setups as there are planes. also combo's with the DA 100 for props and mufflers sets?
I'm starting to work on mine but want it right. Setup first then paint or graffixs
Kevin
Rick P. I really like your rudder tray setup but of course don't remember the company you said it was at Pocono last weekend.

I have added 150 grams on the tailwheel.
It is really better now. I'm going to put another 50 grams.

Hey Kevin,
No problem, just E-mail John Mitchell from www.aeroprotect.com. He will get you all fixed up. If you want to see more detailed pics of the installation just let me know.
