Large ARF Aerobat?

I posted this in the ARF forum but never got any real responses. I thought it may be more applicable here and that the people that read the IMAC forum may be more knowledgeable about these types of planes and flying.

I am looking for a large monoplane aerobatic ARF with good precision aerobatic flying and decent 3D capability.

I probably won't be competing in IMAC but want to practice my flying to become better at precision aerobatics and maybe some 3D.

It must be powered by a glow engine (don't want the hassle of converting to gas at this time) and have unlimited vertical, preferably with a 2-piece wing no smaller than 70" span. I would prefer an Extra but would look at an Edge too.

I still haven't decided which plane/engine combo to buy. But right now my preference in this order is:

1. World Models Extra 300S 80" with OS 1.60FX, Bisson Pitts Muffler and Perry Pump

2. Yellow Aircraft 120 Size Extra 300L with Saito 1.80

3. Yellow Aircraft 120 Size Extra 300L with OS 1.60FX, Bisson Pitts Muffler and Perry Pump

4. Hangar 9 Edge 540 with Saito 1.80

5. Hangar 9 Edge 540 with OS 1.60FX, Bisson Pitts Muffler and Perry Pump

I have read nearly every thread on RCU about these types of planes and haven't found a definitive answer as to which one will give me what I am after.

Which one of the combinations listed above will give me what I want?

a. Glow Engine
b. Unlimited Vertical
c. 2-Piece wing
d. Excellent precision aerobatics
e. Good 3D capability
f. Larger than 70" span.
g. Must be an ARF.

Obviously a, f and g are OK for all of the combinations listed, but how about the other criteria?

Any relevant input would be appreciated.

If you definitely want glow, I would go with the great planes patty wagstaff extra 300, and a moki 2.1 for unlimited performance.

I would recommend one of the following:

1. World Models Extra 300S 80" with OS 1.60FX, Bisson Pitts Muffler and Perry Pump

5. Hangar 9 Edge 540 with OS 1.60FX, Bisson Pitts Muffler and Perry Pump

I have seen and flew the Edge and it is nice.
I have the GP PW Extra but have not flown it yet.

I have flown...

a WM Extra with a OS 1.60. Standard muffler, no pump. Plane was okay for an everyday flyer, simple aerobatics, and all around fun plane. This combination is not an unlimited vertical bird. The owner also had massive cooling proplems with this combo. Fried two OS's in this bird. Cowl needs massive air flow openings.....

OK. After more research and feedback on another thread, I have scratched the WM Extra + OS 1.60 combo.

So with entry number 1 gone and if I remove the requirement (c) for a 2-piece wing and cross off the Saito 1.80, what comes up as next most logical choice?

This is where I am at now:

1. Yellow Aircraft 120 Size Extra 300L with OS 1.60FX, Bisson Pitts Muffler and Perry Pump

2. Hangar 9 Edge 540 with OS 1.60FX, Bisson Pitts Muffler and Perry Pump

and an outside runner:

3. Great Planes 1/4 Extra 300S Wagstaff ARF with Moki 2.10, Bisson Pitts Muffler and maybe if it is needed the Perry Pump.

I really would prefer not to have to go to a Moki as it would mean carrying another fuel with low nitro rather than using the Powermaster YS 20/20 which I have now. But I do like the look of the GP Patty.

So where are we at now? 1, 2 or 3?

I am stuck evenly between number 1 and 2.

Number 2 is your best bet.
I have flown the plane with a larger engine and it flies great!

Choices

You might look into the Lanier Edge. It has the wing on a tube you mention which makes it easier to move. About the same size as the Hanger 9 (one piece wing).

As far as precsion flying an Extra is very hard to beat. The Edge can be tricky to stall entering spins and snap rolls.

neither the h-9 edge or yellow extra has a two piece wing like you want, i fly a lanier edge with a 1.60 and an 18x8 pro zinger and has absolute unlimted vertical.I have had a toc competitor fly my plane and he thinks the plane 3d's very very well for an over the counter arf as he refered to it, plus will land like a snail, no tip stalling on that bird.

The World Models Extra is an awesome machine with a larger glow engine like a Moki. I've been running 12.5% nitro in my Moki and it doesn't seem to mind it. I have flown the WM Extra with a Brison 2.4, and while it would slow down on vertical uplines, for everyday purposes it basically had an unlimited vertical. I'm talking at least 400 feet before it stopped going up. You would probably appreciate going with the low nitro fuel, since it costs around half of 20/20. The WM is also larger than the GP. If my DP Extra goes in tomorrow, I'll order a WM Extra the next day.

Lanier Edge 540T!!! the Only way

I would have to say the Lanier Edge 540T & the OS 160. I have had the Chance to fly all these birds. The Lanier Edge is By far the Lightest of them all and the wing panels fit very well and is suitable for IMAC or 3D styles of flying. the Lanier Edge comes in atleast 2 lbs lighter than the H9, Yellow, DP, or WM

It also has a lot less wing area. There is a big difference here. You can't evenly compare the smaller Lanier Edge to the larger planes and tout how light it is.

Lanier Edge: 73" span, 1,008 square inches
WM Extra: 80.5" span, 1,175 square inches
DP Extra: 76" span, 1,220 square inches

Ryan, How much diff would I see on this WM 80" extra with a Mvvs 1.60 gasser instead of a 1.60 glow. Every thread I see here about the Mvvs say they are getting 7200 to 7400 on a 18'6" prop with it!!!! Just wondering. Thanks Hooker53

Anybody think about the GP Gene Sousey (sorry about the spelling) with an OS 1.60? If it is anything like the PW Extra it will be super!

Just adding my personal experience before you take the plunge. This is fact... I had a Saito 180 on my Lanier Edge 540T and I had to add an ENTIRE package of Great Planes lead to the nose for it to balance (16oz I think). The plane comes out VERY tail heavy. If you decide to go with this plane I would recommend putting the elevator servos in the fuselage. I moved the wing tube back 1.5" (major surgery for me) and still had lead on the nose. But... plane flew very well. If you dont mind the balance issues...go for it. Just my .02

I got a Hangar 9 Edge with a Supertiger 2300 with a 16x8 prop and a perry carb. At 13 pounds thats got unlimited vertical

I have the GP Gene Soucy 1.60 extra 300 with a Super Tigre G-2300 engine with a perry carb on it. It will swing an APC 18x6W prop at 8500 rpm. The plane flies great and has unlimited vertical. I am not sure but think that it weights around 12-13 pounds. This plane is awsome and flies great. Here is a couple of pictures of mine.

I just got through with my latest project and flew it this past weekend and I reccomend it very highly and it would fit your requirements.
Dave patrick Edge 540T and a saito 1.80, used the pull pull for elevator and rudder, 100 oz servos all around and the wing as well as the tail group are removable for transport.
Very nice setup.

Miloh.

I fly an OS 1.60 FX with an 18x6W and I am holding a strong 9200 rpm on the ground. Evidently much better thrust
