Default 72mhz AND 2.4 Ghz in one Radio?

Hello, I'm currently a proud owner of a JR 7202 which is on 72mhz. I love this radio but I have been thinking that one of these days I should consider moving into the 2.4 technology. My problem is that I can't afford to just buy a radio and replace every receiver that I own. Is there still a 72mhz radio out there that has synthesized adjustable frequencies that also is capable of swapping with a 2.4 module? This would be ideal because I could use the same radio for everything while I slowly replace my 72Mhz receivers with 2.4. It looks like the 9303 was capable of this, but it appears to be discontinued. Any advice would be great.
Thanks

For JR, you can probably pick up an XP8103 or XP9303 and use a 72Mhz Synthesized RF Module or the Spektrum 2.4 Module. I have two XP9303's, one with the Synthesized RF Module and one with the Spektrum Module. I can switch them between Tx's and copy Model Memories between the two. I have also used both modules on my XP8103.

One feature that drew me to the XP9303 was that I could have 9 fully proportional channels whether I was in PPM, PCM, or 2.4Ghz. My Futaba 9C could take a Spektrum Module, but only gave me 8 channels in PPM or 2.4Ghz and in PCM, the 9th channel was only a On/Off Switch and not Proportional.

There are Spektrum 2.4GHz modules for other manufacturers which may or may not give you 9 Proportional channels.

I assume you wanted to be compatible with your existing JR receivers.

You may also be able to put 2.4Ghz modules from other companies, in your XP8103 or XP9303, like Hitec, Futaba, XPS, and/or others, and use their 2.4 Rx's, instead.

I also found these threads on converting your 7202 to 2.4, using Google. There are more.

I have a JR 9303.  I bought that unit on purpose.  I used to fly carbon fiber sailplanes and 2.4 was not recommended.  Only 72 mhz.  I bought a 2.4 module for it and can switch the TX to fit the ship I want to fly.  Probably find a 9303 on Ebay.

Are there any other options out there besides the 9303?

If you want to spend big bucks, I believe I saw a version of the JR 12X, that accepts 72Mhz RF Modules, at the Toledo Show, last year.
You could also just buy a Spektrum DX7, for $350, and have one Tx for 72Mhz and one for 2.4.
You could also buy a Hitec Aurora 9, for another $100 to $200, use their 2.4 Rx's, and still keep the JR 7202.

Do you want New or Used?

Well I wasn't really thinking about the budget aspect just yet. I was really just wondering what the options were out there. But after browsing I bit I guess it would just be easier to buy a 2.4 and use 2 transmitters until I totally convert my fleet to 2.4 receivers. I was browsing around and I think the Dx8 would fit my budget and the telemetry sounds like a cool feature. Any thoughts on the quality of this radio?

The 11X that the rest of the world gets is still a modular radio, and will still run any standard JR RF module, as well as Spektrum *WITH* model match (it's been verified . . . ). The only problem is that you would have to source it from overseas . . .

We have a number of World Class model builders and pilots who have either purchased the DX8 or are considering it. They also have the JR 11X, 12X, X9503, or X9303 but they are intrigued by the Telemetry capabilities and want to buy the DX8 as a second or third radio. One guy has also purchased the Eagle Tree Telemetry System, prior to this DX8 purchase, and he still wants a DX8.

One club member has the Aurora 9 and while it is not necessarily JR/Spektrum compatible, it is really nice to be able to see the Rx battery voltage, on the Tx display, from the ground. There are other Telemetry options as well for that radio.

Well now I've been looking at the aurora 9 and it looks like a fantastic radio. Unless anybody knows something about the dx8 that makes it better, I just may purchase that one. I've read alot of "aurora 9 vs DX8" debates and the aurora 9 usually seems to win.

From what I have seen, the Aurora 9 is a full featured radio and priced to fit anyone's budget.

The most important thing about buying a new radio is Quality, Reliability, Service, and a variety of Receivers to fit all your needs. In the winter, I like to fly light electrics both Outdoor and Indoor. Spektrum has a variety of Light Weight Rx's and many are found in the "Bind and Fly" aircraft sold by ParkZone and others. JR/Spektrum also has a number of higher end Rx's for Large and Giant models, as well.

Hitec and Futaba have a good selection of Rx's, as well.

There are cheap Futaba/Hitec and JR/Spektrum compatible Rx's coming from Hobby King, in China.
