Default Recommend Spectrum System Please

I'm just about to get back into the hobby, out for about 8 years....looking for 6 or 7 channel system for gas plane 20cc to 50cc and electric helicopters. Just looking at for sale items.....what's mode 1 or 2? Should I buy combo or buy trans, receiver, servos separate? New or used? Thanks

Mode 1 is throttle on right.

Mode 2 is throttle on left. These are FAR more common in the USA.

If you're flying a 50cc gasser don't get less than an 8 channel radio, personally I'd recommend the DX9 from Spektrum or the 8J from Futaba.

My 60cc stuff is two elevator channels, two aileron channels, rudder, throttle and throttle kill which is 7. Get anything scale with retracts or flaps and you see how you eat up channels quickly.

There's ways around it but the channel count isn't the only thing you get with a better radio, the software, features, and screens are better as well.

Just my 2 cents

You cannot go wrong with the DX9. MY only complaint is availability of the Spectrum Servos but this seems to be getting better. You can always use third party compatible servos with the Spektrum RX. NOTE: Some servos may require modifications to the connector to get them to fit into some of the Spektrum receivers. The AR9020 RX required modifications to the Hitec HS-5485HB connector to make them fit. The term "Universal Connector" is a misnomer in my opinion.

It is not a hard modification to do and only takes a few minutes.

The Spektrum A6150 servos that IO purchased connected to the AR9020 RX with a tight fit without any modifications.

Like you I getting back into the hobby. I have a Futaba 14SG and a Spektrum DX9 as my current radios.

The servos in combos are usually not the servos you need!
Good used are normally 1/2 of the new price. There is a risk, naturally!
If you can use used 72Mhz equipment, it's cheap!

I don't think we sell any transmitters with servos any more. Receivers yes, usually as short-term intro packages. We haven't included servos or batteries in ages.
