I am thinking about getting my HAM license to go to 53MHz radio. I currently have a standard 72 MHz 8103. I think the only thing I have to do is change the module in my radio, is this correct? Do I have to have a special receiver or just the specific crystal installed in it? Thanks in advance.

I would not recommend moving to 53 Mhz as there are many reported problems on the 53 Mhz band throughout the country. In fact, we no longer sell new systems on 53 Mhz. You could move to 50 Mhz by simply swapping the module. The module is the only thing in the TX that would need to be changed. You would also need to get a new receiver on the frequency you want to move to.

All of my present receivers will not work is that correct? Out of curiosity what is the main differences between the 50 and 72 MHz receivers? Always looking to learn.

That is correct. The receivers will not work properly, you would have VERY low range, and they can not be converted. The difference is components internally in the receiver that affect the tuning of the receiver. This is also true for the module in the TX, they can also not be converted from 72 Mhz to 50 Mhz or vice versa.
