Default DSM?

I hate to display my ignorance, but.... What exactly does "DSM" stand for? "Digital Spektrum Modulation"? or ...

This has been bugging me forever.

Thanks for the help!

The above will explain. You are correct except the spelling.

Direct Sequence Spread spectrum - as opposed to Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS).

Futaba's particular implementation of FHSS is FASST in their nomenclature.

Spektrum / JR may call DSM something else, but the two basic forms of spread spectrum that we use are direct sequence and frequency hopping, or a combination of both.

GPS satellites use DSM. Frequency hopping has been around for a long time, much longer than DSM.

From wikipedia:
Frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) is a method of transmitting radio signals by rapidly switching a carrier among many frequency channels, using a pseudorandom sequence known to both transmitter and receiver. It is utilized as a multiple access method in the frequency-hopping code division multiple access (FH-CDMA) scheme.

In telecommunications, direct-sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) is a modulation technique. As with other spread spectrum technologies, the transmitted signal takes up more bandwidth than the information signal that is being modulated. The name 'spread spectrum' comes from the fact that the carrier signals occur over the full bandwidth (spectrum) of a device's transmitting frequency.

In the comparison between the 2, DSSS wins out for reliability. FHSS is used less by the larger communications guys like 3Com, Netgear, IBM, Nortel, Avaya, etc for 802.11A,B,G &N (2.4GHz, etc). I would not trust any transmitter that did not use this modulation method.

True diversity (using two antennas at the TX & RX) would make the systems even more reliable.
