A friend gave me a 1/2 wing from his dearly departed ARF so I cloned the ARF approach of a barn door aileron. I modified the plans using the measurements derived from the ARF wing. It included creating a one-piece rear spar that served as the "new" trailing edge of the wing. I'll post my build pics in this and a subsequent post.

I hope that the images aren't as big for you as they appear for me. This has happened to me once or twice before but I've posted over 1000 pics without any "biggness"issues.

Ignore my wing tip treatment. I tried something and really didn't like how it turned out.

You'll notice that Iused dado joints for most (if not all)of the rib to leading / trailing edge joints. I'm thinking that this was a SIG requested update for the ARFconstruction because our friends in China use hot glue for the joints. If you don't create dado joints they just ain't gonna work as hot glue isn't absorbed into the wood fibers like CA or aliphatic resin (Titebond).

My intent was to cover the wing with transparent Ultracote which will expose all of the build nuances.

The dihedral was reduced from 6"to 1.5" as measured by holding one top on the table and measuring how far off the table the other tip is.

Ialso converted the wing from rubber bands to a bayonet front / 1/4x20 nylon screw rear attachment - yea, just like the ARF. I did the same mod to an LT-40 and did a build thread with pics. Same procedure for the Senior with some "twists".

When I built my 2nd wing, built in barn door style. 5 bays wide, deep as the rear spar. Built each wing half, then cut out the ailerons from wing halves. Dihedral was reduced to 1" under one wing tip. Set up the servos to provide more up travel than down travel on the ailerons. I'll try to post some pics this weekend. Your build is coming along great!

Right wing panel complete. Starting left panel today.

I do not like that the bottom center is not sheeted in this kit. As it will be pressed against the fuselage with all those rubberbands I want the center completely solid so I will be sheeting it. So I glued 'rails' to the inside of the center ribs to glue the sheeting to (last photo)

Wing is now completed. As I stated earlier I do not like that the bottom center wing wasnt designed to be sheeted. I sheeted the bottom center so it would be more solid against the fuselage.

hi shd,
I did the same thing on my first one, but not again, it really isn't needed, even though you would think it is. It actually sits on the spar mostly, then the LE and TE. The rest doesn't really have much contact.

I agree with showing off the birdcage. Here are some pictures of mine done in transparent orange and white ultracoat.

I have been out of rc for over 15 yrs...decided to get back into it, boys are now 21(twins) and no longer play any sports and for the most part are on their own. I have a mostly built older sig kit (no Ailerons) . I got this kit from my father-in-law several years ago when they move from Illinois to Washington. When I used to build I always made patterns for the ribs, he didnt, so I'm stuck with no rib pats and I am wanting to cut ailerons into the already made wing. So if anyone would be kind enough to send me a couple of full size rib pats it would be greatly appreciated. I know this is probably a topic but what size 4 stroke would you put on it?

I built a wing with ailerons for my Senior to fly four channel. I tried a Saito 45, not enough poop. Maybe ok with the stock wing. Also tried a Saito 65- I thought that to be the perfect combo. The Senior ARF was real popular at our field a few years ago. Many had the OS70 4 stroke- another great combo.

Hi Dalemilam58,

I have an old OS .61 four stroke in my Kadet Senior. The model was designed to fly on allot less power but, with the extra power you can have a bit more fun with the Senior. I have heard that some are even running small gasoline engines in their planes. There is a 15cc gas engine out there that would be way more than enough power. Who knows, there is prolly some crazy out there that would hang a Moki 5cyl four stroke on a Kadet

Hope this helps.

Attached is a scale picture of the Senior ribs. PMme know if you have problems. I can put 'em in a pdf file if you like.

4-Stroke? Saito 91 of course! And some throttle management, floats, and a bombbay for a candy drop.

Thanks for the ribs...printed smaller than they are but will have to work on that...these look different than mine...I have an OLD Sig Senior...probably from the early 80s...I have a W-1 rib not installed it looks as tho the chord is almost the same all the way to the tip...with the exception being spar cutouts...I'm going to saw the wings anyway and cut down the dihedrel to almost nuthing and make some ailerons if I can figure out where to mount the servos or use bellcranks...again thanks for the help

This thread has saved the life of one ugly Sr Kadet.
All y'all have some very nice looking Kadets! Kudo's.
The transparent Monocote is a great choice for this stick built plane,
it gives it a real nice nostalgic touch.

I obtained a very rough Kadet in a buyout.
This thing has been a miserable flying pos. But that is because it is all out of wack.
Tail heavy doesn't begin to describe this thing... more on that later.

Now I know this thing has a great reputation so I haven't burned it, yet...
If it weren't for the fact that it has a nice big ole honkin' Magnum .91
on the front of it I might have auger'd the thing into the ground for the fun of it.
I'll have to get some pics. Its like those ugly jokes...
It's so ugly...the cat tried to bury it. It's so ugly... and so on.
We've affectionately named it BigBird after the Sesame Street character.

The builder (bless his heart and RIP) wasn't big on details.
Actually he might have acquired it himself, so I'll give him the benefit of doubt.
But who ever built it must have used a hacksaw to make most of the cuts.

'Big Bird' is really a diamond in the rough though and I know it has potential.
After finding this thread I'm inspired to put the effort into rebuilding it and
dedicating it to my late friend Don.

I'm not trying hijack the thread from shd3920 who is doing a great job both
building and fielding a variety of advice.
But I'd like to pull up to the bar and share some of my fertilizer stories.

(I've never posted a picture before so any advice is welcome)

Big and yellow. Notice the small strip ailerons and flaps! The flaps work well.

A little update on where we are at with the build. The framework is complete and most of the sanding is done. Waiting for the cash to pick up the Ultracote that is being held for me at my LHS. We will be covering in medium blue and white. Just a simple scheme, nothing fancy. We will be screwing on the windows without the thin ply frame as they were destroyed, and not planning on using glue as I find it to be a little messy.

Will keep you posted.

Ozier, that bird don't look all that rough to me, it looks good. I was wondering . . . this plane flies so slow and it glides right in so smoothly for the landing so I have heard. Why the need for the flaps???

cell phone pics hide a multitude of ugly. But all that can be fixed by striping the
old silk/dope covering and using monokote. The real problem is weight and balance.
It was converted to tail dragger and the tail wheel is a bit heavy but much worse
he mounted a full std size servo in the tail for elevator. That puts about 2 oz in the tail,
I've added 8 oz up front to compensate but it needs more. But rather than adding wieght Im
going to put the servo back inside and use a lighter wheel. hopefully that will get the bal back.
Then wings need reworking. Barn door ailerons, some very good examples here.

Flaps? Oh yeh they are great, this thing just keeps on gliding across the field. drop the flaps and
plane fly slow motion, cool man. but be prepared to trim down a bunch.

No worries, nice Kaos, they fly well and easy build too. Great plane to progress to after an Ugly Stick.
Kadet > Stick > Kaos or Quick Fli.

Another encouraging thing after several flights on the Kadet Sr. is that I found the performance
to be quite good, especially with ample power of the .91. On take off I use a little more than half power.
Then for cruise I use just above a fast idle, just enough so it doesn't load up after few mins.
The Kadet buzzes around quite well with very little power. I had to go to a small 12x6 prop to slow it down
enough for landing. At moderate idle it would fly right across the field and never settle to runway.
Now with a smaller prop and very low idle setting AND flaps working more as air brakes she settles nicely.
A 40/42 size BB 2Cylcle would be smallest I'd go. A SuperTigre G42 would probably be ideal. A 45/46 BB 2C
or a 70 4c would make it real fun.

Regards, Cliff

Edit your post. There is a "Delete" option for any pics or attachments. Select the one (which is - the one), hit OKand it's gone.

I'm in the process of covering a Chaos so I like the pic ...

SeamusG, Your thread is the one i was reading and wanted to commend you on useing silver to cover with. I wanted to post my pic there of my silver covering on the Kaos, and some how it ended up in the Kadet thread, that i follow along with also. All good, both good threads and both great planes. I was probably half asleep at the time. Gene

OK have the build table built...going to work on the Senior...question that I have... I'm also going to build a Top Flight Corsair 62" ...I'm wanting to put this engine in the corsair CRRCPRO GF26I V2 26cc, but I want stick time on the Senior and run time on the motor....how much overkill is this going to be putting it in the senior?...I know from reading that the Senior in very tail heavy and I'm sure the plane can handle the 26 weight wise...need so thought before I buy this...I've been out of RC for 15 yrs so i need the stick time on a floater...then after the corsair I'm going to get real busy with a 100" Stuka from Ziroli plans, with a 55cc in it

I'm just thinking on line here, if you go the 26cc gasser rout on the Kadet, you will probably need to make it a tail dragger to allow for prop clearance. I would also reinforce the area behind the firewall to allow for the extra vibes the motor will make. I was actually looking at the new DLE-20 for mine, which is a tail dragger. I currently have an OS .40LA on it & it IS a FLOATER! As far as weight goes, there is a big difference between an OS .40 & a 26cc gasser. I do have a substancial amount of weight up front to balance mine, that could be offset by the 26cc motor though. I think its do-able, and will keep an eye on this thread to see how it works out for you......Gene
