Default Sig 1/4 scale cub help

Hello,
I acquired this plane a few months ago. Silk and dope finished and just in really good shape. The previous owner recently passed awaya and I now have the plane. I have a couple of questions. First, when I test fit the 2 peice wings tonight, I realized nothing really holds the rear of the right wing in place. The front of the wing of course has the dowls and a small 4/40 bolt but I see nothing that keeps the rear portion of the right wing together. Please see pictures. Even when the wing brace is secured to the fuse this does not hold the rear of the wing in place. I MUST be missing something here.

Thanks
Mike

That's the way my Hangar 9 1/4 scale works, too. It has over 400 flights on it now and the wings stay secure. Each wing is secured to the fuselage near the center of the chord of the wing via a 1/4" 20 bolt. Remember also that your struts are most likely functional so make sure that they are tied securely to teh bottom of the fuselage, too.

Mike , You're not missing anything. The 1/4 scale sig cub is built that way. ggraham500 is correct that the wing struts do help to prevent the wing from seperating but it doesn't stop the movement. There are a couple things that can be done .
(1) It is possible to add a locking tab near the trailing edge of the root rib. The tab is fastened permanently to the center section and will slip into a pocket that you make in the root rib of the right wing panel . The assembly is the held together by inserting a screw into the tab through the wing panel . The screw can be located on the top or the bottom of the wing .
(2) The panels could be epoxied together ,making a 1 piece wing.
(3) The wing joint could be temporarily joined together with a strip of covering ,this could be easily removed if seperation of the wing halves is ever needed.
I have used all 3 of these on different builds per customers request and all work well.
#3 works especially well if the covering can be easily matched. It looks good and enables easy dissasembly if needed.

OK guys thanks for the info. I like the idea of the locking tab so I will intall one. On a side note... I'm test fitting a DLE 30 this weekend to be sure it will fit within the cowl with very little cutting. I just want to keep it as close as possible to the original build.
Thanks again!
Mike

Mike , keep us posted with pictures on the DLE install. I would like to see your install before I decide to fit a DLE 30 to my cub.

HELP!!!!!!!!! Sorry to tag on your thread but there seems to be alot of CUB knowledge here!! Yesterday I Bought a 1/4 scale J3 Cub at a local swap meet. They said it was a Hangar 9 but with 35 years of building and flying under my belt, I knew it was not. At least not close to the current one! My problem is I can not figure out who makes this one. It is fabric covered and I believe it is FACTORY done because it came with an extra set of new wings, also in fabric, and part #s of 168 and 169 printed on the root ends, which tells me it is an ARF! Two piece wing which joins to center on either side of the fuse. Similar to the Balsa USA which has the center of the wing as part of the fuse. It has two aluminum spars bolted to the fuse that the wing halves slip onto. It has ONLY a 100" wing and it is NOT a clipped wing!! Any help guys would be GREATLY APPR. I'm going to give this to a friend for Christmas and would just like to know for sure what it is!! Thanks in advance, Doug

Sounds like an early H9 1/4 scale J3. Mine is also the early version. Flys great. I changed my cowl to a Fiberglass Specialties Super Cub to accommodate the engine. I am using (for the last 400 flights) a YS F120 4-stroke but in time will switch to a gas engine. Probably a Zenoah G-26 or the like. See My Models. It balances right on the wing spar. Give it a nice long run to lift off and have a blast.

So what info do you need?
