Default 1/5 Scale Pica Waco Build Thread

With the summer months staring us in the face here in Texas that usually means I head to the garage and start my building season.
This time I will be pulling down my prized vintage Pica Waco kit and I thought starting a build thread would keep me motivated.
Some things I am kicking around is the engine choice. I will either use a G-26 or an OS 155FS, Haven't decided yet.
What I have decided on is the covering. I will be using the Poly-Fab system or other wise known as Stits Scale Covering. I also plan on using some of the great ideas from Bill's big thread over in Golden Era and scaling this plane out within reason. (I still plan to fly her when she's done.)
More to come.....
Red.

I saw a build thread, now gone, that used an OS FT 1.60 as the power plant. Did not have to cut the cowl with this engine. I imagine it sounded pretty good also.

I have the big Pica Waco Kit and that engine. Will build it some day!! I also have a Partial 1.20 Waco Kit, wings and a few other misc parts.

Sure where do you want me to send the letter?

Your not going to believe this but I had 2! Bought one new in the box for $525.00 on RCU. Then picked up a XLNT Condition one for about 375.00 as I recall on Ebay. I didnt think I would win, just threw a bid because I could. Won it. Have since sold the NIB one.
Keeping the other one for when I the time to build it. The deals are out there, if your in the right place at the right time. Or just get lucky. Oh and yes I am, single LOL.

I wish it was that easy Vince. That would be a great sounding engine but even I can't see spending that kinda money. To many other things I can think of to do with it.

Rick
Thanks for tuning in. You might not have to drive to far, I sure would like to be done with this before Monaville in Sept. Will see how it goes, would be fun to fly it down there.

Geez Red, that's a lot to take on by September. Maybe September of 2012! You might have a look at the DLE 30 for your Waco. You still have to carve up the bottom of the cowl but it's not too bad. Price is right and the quality is right also. Just won't sound as good as the Gemini twin. Planning on posting some pics for the Brotherhood on the Waco thread once you get this build started? BTW, make sure to admire Rick in his Waco T-shirt at Monaville-he's dashing

It never hurts to set goals, even if they are far fetched. The pupose of this thread is purely motivational, I thought if I had a few followers, that would keep me in the garage and off the couch.
I will post some photos if I get hung up on something, I was worried about the firewall modification that would have to be done to set the DLE 30 back far enough, I thought the G-26 would be an easier engine to install. I have a DLE 30 in a stick so I agree with you that they are great engines.
Looking forward to getting off work today, I will be off until next Wed.[8D] I have some hanger maint. to do first, then I'm gonna get started on this build.

Red, Why not do it in the YMF thread. That way all the brothers would see it. I came upon this one by accident.

That's a great thread, I'm frequently a lurker there. Lots of great info, but I'd love to see a straight up build thread, start to finish with a lot of the important scale modifications.

Red,
I am subscribed, drop a few updates in the brotherhood as well. I agree it would be nice to see a stand alone thread on a build. The big thread can get a bit broken up with alot of post. Not knocking the thread as their is always alot of good info popping up it is just really hard to follow a specific build.
Enjoy the Journey!!

I got things cleaned up in the garage and I will start sorting out the kit. Even though this kit has been around 20 something years the wood appears to be in good shape. I may purchase the plans from the AMA as I don't think the ones in the box will hold up. Will see.

I believe the kit has been around longer than 20 years?

It's a great kit to have.

Looking forward to the build.

How about some nice photos and info on the model in the background?

Red,

Here is a poke all in fun. After you took the pictures..........Did you put the top back on the box? Or did you start laying out the peices and sorting?

All in fun now. I could not resist. Can't tell you how many times I have put the top back on a box. Including the one that contains my PICA 1/5 scale WACO.

I too would like to see you continue a strait up build thread here. But needless to say, I do hope you post updates as you go along in the "WACO" thread.

Yes, the other WACO is looking good in the background. Is that a 1/6 scale?

LOL, No, I have begun sorting. The water heater is giving me problems this morning so I will have to look at that today. [:@]
That other Waco is my 1/6 scale Pica. I finished it about a year ago.

Red,

WOW ____an absolute gorgeous model airplane.
I am out of words to express myself. It is just beautiful and you can be proud of it.

I would bet it flies as good as it looks.
I am one of the biplane fans and the Wacos are really up at the top.

Congratulations to you for this one.

Zor

P.S.: ___I know that water heaters have a limited life span.
I had to buy a new one a couple years back and being a different size (60 gallons from 40 gallons) had to redo some of the copper piping, change the wiring and fuse box due to higher wattage.

End

Thermocouple replaced on water heater so on with the sorting.
Thanks Zor, it really is a fantastic flying airplane. Seeing that little guys scarf flapping in the wind always brings a smile to my face.
Pica didn't stamp the part numbers on the diecut pieces back then so you must match up sheets with the diagram and label them. Kit's of today like Topflight Gold Edition's have us spoiled.
Just to prove I ain't loafing, a few pics.

Looks as like I am only missing one diecut piece, and a rather important one at that (Fuse Bottom Former). The manufacturer supplied me with two F-4B's and no F-5B. I am supposed to have one of each. I will need to consult the brotherhood to see if someone will e-mail me the pattern. If need be I will order the plans and patterns from the AMA but I think that will be a last resort.

Got what I needed from Andy (amscat) over at the Brotherhood. What a fine organization we belong to!
Since we are all friends here I will start signing off by my real name.

When I started going through all the sticks, the rubber bands just fell apart. I spent the rest of the afternoon putting in order by size and length. I will have some stencils made for the stripes and such. No stickers on this bird.
There's a Waco in there somewhere.

Looking forward to your build. You are right about the Waco Brotherhood. They are an amazing resource. Some excellent builders there. And all willing to lend a helping hand. I’m proud to be a member.
