It is time to take the box out to the bench and see how it goes.
My kit has almost two years old in its box, but now is the time.

All these finished extras look so good! I'm trying to decide between an electric conversion of the extra 60 or gp rv-4 kit, I've read both fly amazing. Any suggestions?

Yeah, forget electric and put an FS-110 in it.

j/k, I'm a glow type of guy so I couldn't pass it up.

I'm building this kit, and I'm wondering about the best orientation for the engine.......Saito 125, side or inverted mount? Looks like both will fit well, but what's preferable?

I'm liking this forum, and will check back often to see how your planes are going. This one is built to the plans, but the ideas you present here about oversizing the control surfaces look pretty good to me. I haven't built a kit in about 25 years, but I might just get another one of these and try some of your mods!

Thanks for your opinion about engine orientation.

the mod's aren't difficult and are worthwhile. certainly beef up the landing gear mount and reinforce the engine box if putting a large engine on it.

i like side mount, so, that's what i did. it is similar in operation to upright, can be less grief to start/run.

keep it light.

bolt on wing from below, like any low wing aircraft. Goldberg is top mount, removeable canopy, then the wing is bolted to the top of fuse. best would be remove able canopy and internal bolts like a large scale.

look at a side profile of a goldberg and a GP, you will notice the height of the wing mount

Hello Everybody,
This is a great thread, and i was in need of some information . I am an intermediate RC flier, interested in learning and flying advanced pattern.
I am trying to select a good plane that i could use to practice, practice and practice my flying on .
Would this GP Extra .60 be good for this purpose ?
I read that pattern planes need a long fuselage, to increase the tail moment, and this Extra does not have this .. Would some other airplane, like the UltraSport be better ?
How is the inverted flying and Knife edges on this ? Specifically the roll and pitch coupling associated with the rudder ?

If this plane fits in the above requirements, i would be using a .91FX on it. with dual elevator servos, and perhaps wit hthe modifications to the rudder/elevators as posted on this thread.

Please let me know,
Thanks everyone !
Gaurav

it's not a pattern aircraft. it is a scale aerobat. i suggest that you look around on the pattern threads, if you are specifically looking for pattern. this a/c is good for what it is meant for. i like the flying characteristics of the edge 540 or extra 300s.

Check post [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=1332609http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=1332609http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=1332609http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=1332609]Post 132[/link]. AdrianM who started this thread thought it was an excellent sport scale pattern plane.

Knife edge flying is easy with AdrianM's mods. Mine could make knife edge loops (big though!) Inverted flight is also easy with just a slight elevator throw. Rolls are axial and just straight forward.

gauravag, build one and go fly it. You will never regret it.

Hi.
I´ve just finished read that post, and i´m asking myself why didn´t read it before.
I build two GP Extras 300S, first die for a radio interference and second is still flying.
Please could someone explainme what´s the difference about build the wing as
instructions shows about dihedral, or do the wing in a piece with no dihedral in top
of the wing and the dihedral in bottom wing due to sloping of wing (both of mine i building
as described and flyies really great)
And my second question, has anybody build airfoiled tail and two wings???
I´m thinking do it, but need finish the proyect i´m in, if anybody did please tellme
AdrianM if you read that, please i´m interested knowing what you think about

dihedral makes it level out itself. reducing it will make it stay more in the direction it is. my ucando .46 and my extreme flight 300s have no dihedral, makes it no harder to fly, just take time to get to know it.

there's no reason you can't build airfoiled horizontal and verticle, just some more work. the two pc wing would be more convenient to transport. i considered building it w/a removable canopy section and two pc wing w/a tube. but there are other a/c available that already have those, why bother?

Alfredo, nice to see you eyeing up a new project! The Ultimate is almost finnished so this plane may be the next one I build. Looks sweet and probably similar to my ultrasport 60 just a more 'crazy'.

I have had this kit unopened for about three years, but I have been busy building other projects, (GP Cap, TF P47, and a few ARFs) I am building a Dynaflite SE5a at this time and I am trying to finish it by this year and the start with this extra with some mods.
I am glad to see you around too.

Well I am back to building this. I have the wing complete but didn't see anything about fiberglassing the center section. Is it needed? Or is it just added weight? I am using the Magnum 91 2 stroke tilted with the stock muffler at the bottom of the fuse. Also using a Dubro landing gear and Sullivan tail wheel assy.
Thanks for the help, MikeB

Nice engine choice! I went side mounted, but would probably go inverted if I did it again.

I would think so. A 125 gives unlimited vertical. But I am not against shoehorning, if that is your bag.

Hi all,
I built this model a couple of years ago and have Futaba 3004 servos on it. I think i should upgrade. What servos are you all using ? I am considering the Hitech HS-5485HB which is a digital servo and gives 6.4 kg/cm at 6V and .17 sec speed.

I believe with this servo i would have a better control and a more powerful knife edge ? or do you think 3004 is enough for this plane ?

I have a OS .91 FX on my Extra.

Thanks
Gaurav

I'm using Hitec 5945's. Strong and cheap. 3004's are good for a trainer or light sport flying. I know I wouldn't trust them based on how I fly. I have a stock built rudder and can knife edge with only moderate rudder input.

Finished my GP Extra 300S a week ago, maidened it last week. Not much to add to what people have said so far, great flying plane. Powered with an OS 91FX, slimeline pitts muffler and APC 16 x 8 prop. I covered the plane with Sig Koverall painted it with Sig Nitrate and Brodak butyrate dope.

It will definately be my "go to" plane this season. The 91FX guzzles fuel compared to the 4 strokes I've been using. I don't know what everyone else is paying for fuel, but around RI it's costing $26 - $32 / gallon. When Ifound that out Iorganized a group fuel buy from S & W Fuels and bought a 55 gallon drum of 15%. Ended up costing less that $10 gallon, so now when this plane sucks down a gallon in a couple days it's not too big a deal.

Thanks to everyone for all the great info in this thread, it made building this kit a breeze.

Beautiful plane! In your opinion, is the koverall method easier or more difficult to do? And which is lighter? Do you know what your all up weight is on the extra?

Hi smithcreek
really nice plane, but please tell us more, final weight, manoeuvres can do, torque rolls perhaps? with the 90 FX can pull up at torque?.
i´m really interested cause i have in mind make the third and last (first was rally light about 3.1Kg. but weak and aninterference make it die in a field of onions, the second i have yet but´s too heavy about 4 kg. both with an OS 91FX), i find time ago an interesting work in this forum something like this: " Great Planes 60 size Extra totally 3D" and i´m thinking try

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_15..._1/key_/tm.htm That's the 3d thread. Mine with a Saito 125 is insane for power. It would hover better had I went full span with the ailerons.
