Koverall is 100% easier  and faster to apply to the airframe, but at least double the work when you add in the time it takes to paint.  IMO you end up adding a little weight, but I'm not interested in 3-D flying, so I really don't worry about 1/4lb, in fact as long as it's not excessive, I like the way a plane flies with a bit of weight.  Mine came in somewhere between 8lb - 8-1/2lb.  I think someone that was better at fabric and dope finishes than I am could do it without adding almost any weight.  I'm still working on that.

Best part of Koverall is you end up with a nearly indestructible finish.  No edges peeling up, no stripes falling off, no bubbles, much harder to punture, and after 100 flights it will still look like new.

Can't answer any questions on 3-D stuff, I think most people have concluded that's not what this plane is good at, but I will say with the 91FX I can point the plane near vertical, maybe 80 degrees, and climb as high as I want at 3/4 throttle.

What size gap should I make for the distance between the counterbalance and the fin? I am shooting for a 1/8 in gap after I sand and apply the 1/8 inch strips along the elevator.

1/8" is too big. All it needs is a CH of clearance. If you need to fill the gap, do so with balsa sheeting. The less gap, the better. It makes it crisper in the air.

Thanks Deadeye,

This is my first kit and I never knew 1/8" was too much. Thanks

Well, your model certainly turned out nice! Love the finish. I'll see if I can manage to post a picture of mine. Need to break in the engine and get in the air!

Thanks,
Glenn

Deadeye,

Your plane looks awesome. I hope it flies as good as it looks. I really like the dark colors. Best of luck man.

Smithcreek,

I really like your plane too, however I have no experiance with the koverall. Does it look smooth and about how much more do you think it costs than monocote for this plane?

thanks guys

It doesn't look like monokote. Not shiny and slick, but there's no comparison for deep rich color. Koverall is a lot cheaper than monokote, but you have to add in the cost of dope, so it ends up costing more in the end. If I had to estimate I'd say a pint of Nitro, a pint of your primary color, a half pint of your secondary and 4oz of trim color, a quart of thinner. So maybe about $70 for everything. The last plane I did with Ultracote cost nearly that. It was a 4*-60 I used 2 rolls orange, one roll ivory, one roll checks, one roll carbon fibre and a can of Rustoleum. I had a lot left over, but that's more than $70.

vtach688,

It won't be a problem though. You need at least a 2kW output in order to make it fun.

I just started building this kit, I have done the mods to the stab and just started the elevators.Have a few questions and was hoping to get you guy's feed back.
.
1. Wing mod, Do I need to extend the ailerons one bay inward and is it needed? My thoughts are the extra aileron surface at slower speeds would be more effective by moving them more into the prop wash. I know it's not a 3D plane, but would this be an overall improvement over stock ?, any thoughts ?

2. I have a Saito 1.00 GK or a ASP 1.20fs. The 1.20 weighs a ton and was going with the 1.00. . Building the plane for Sportsman IMAC , well the Saito be enough?

3. I.m using Spektrum DS 821 digitalservos with a 6 volt 2700mha. battery, torque is 88oz.. Tail mounted servos with the elevator half's joined with 1/8 in. wire , one servo on rudder and one on elevator. Are these good enough .

4. With this set up,, can I realistically get the weight down to 8 lbs. or under ? I'm using a Stanfiberglass cowl.

Thank in advance
Robbie

I think the plane is perfect bone stock. - One of the best flying planes I've owned. I had a Saito .91 in mine.

moondoggie,
Mine has a few mods to the tail feathers, but not the ailerons. It has tremendous roll as is in flight. If you slow down that much that little extra aileron want help. Mine has a saito 120s and has great pull and speed with a Vess 16X6 prop. I think the 100 would do fine. Also even with a heavy engine like my saito I put the servos in the usual place. I would be careful putting the servos in the tail. I also reinforced the landing gear and still managed to break the ply strips they mount to. I now have them attached with nylon 1/4X20 blots. I highly suggest this mod. It is not a matter of if, but when they come out. It does not require a hard hit, and then it is even harder to keep them on.
Good luck
Alan

I did the aileron mod. Not sure about need in flight but I think it makes the wing look "better". My guess would be aileron out on the wing tips makes more of a difference than at the fuse (excpet as noted when you need prop wash to help but this a WIDE fuse...my 14" prop will barely have any wash on the wing at all)

Mine has a sixteen six Vess prop. My saito 120 loves it. Not to fast and pulls like a tractor.

I just bought a completed kit, I am going to put a older OS1.20fs in it. What would you guys recomend for a prop? Should I go with the max size or somewhere in the middle? This is my first areobatic type plane, any things I should be careful of?

Here is a picture of my GP Extra 300S. It is stock except for the landing gear attach area being beefed up and I hide the aileron servos in the wing. I hate to see servos showing. It flys like a Ferrari. Also easy to land.[img][/img]
