Top Flite Giant P-47 Build

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
What did he put into it - how did it get that expensive? I realize retracts and engine are costly, but I was figuring on about $1,500 for the build (looking into building my own rear wheel retract, maybe make my own cockpit interior).

I have about $850.00 into it at this point. All the retracts and wheels have been bought, valve control, engine and fuel tank. I figure I have another $600.00 or so to go on radio rx, servos, batteries, switches and paint. $1,500.00 dollars was what I was figuring at the start, should be close to that, maybe a few more/less, probably a little more!

Hi Gary, Tony here. What finish are you planing on doing. I'm going to try aluminum tape finish. I see your still in the framing stages, still time to do the scale hinge line!!! nice work and I'm looking forward to seeing this bird soon.

I'm gonna go with automotive base coat/clear coat. I've been doing a lot of research on this and have seen some great results. The full scale looks like it would be pretty easy to match the paint. Almost looks like it is painted and not polished aluminum anyway. Maybe someone out there can chime in.
Still thinking on that one too.

I'm in the finishing stages of finishing an AT-6 as in the pic below, also trying using aluminum paint. I have no spray equipment so I’m doing some testing with Lusterkote. It seems to have that “painted” look rather than an unpainted aluminum look.Do you have a thread on painting that you’ve been looking at?

Scratchie,
Bill here again. The numbers I came up with are retail for all new parts, including the kit($249.99), the engine(OS GT 55-$649.99), Futaba 10CAG radio($649.99), 8 Futaa 3050s servos($399.92), 3 Futaba 3152 servos($75.97),Robart retracts complete($502.97), batteries, dual switch with charge jacks, covering glass, 5" Skylite wheels, finishing materials, and misc($403.97) for a total of $2932.80.
In all fairness I must admit that while everything purchased was NIB, I did not pay full retail for any of it. I watched for sales and took advantage of Tower Hobbies discount promotions which netted me $50.00 discount on every $300.00 that I ordered from them. In real time ,in real life I have spent about $2300.00.

Gary, Looks like a great scheme to do. Mine will be more of a fantasy scheme with bits and pieces of other versions, by no means an accurate replication of a specific plane, it will be the "My Baby" plane though! As for the checkers, not much I can offer except do a test run on a sample and see how the process goes. I would do it all black (or white) then mask it off and do the white.
Weather looks good Thursday, I'm going to fly south then, and I'm planning on going to ARCA on Saturday!

Scratchie,
Here's the really good part; I'm not married!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am a 64 year old semi retired R/C and Bass fishing fanatic. I had been out of the R/C hobby for nearly 36 years until two years ago when the bug bit me once again. I just hooked up with a local club where my models have caused a bit of a stir because I finish them in automotive urethane finishes and they look somewhat like show cars as far as the finish is concerned. Basically I am having trouble holding on to my hangar since I have begun to sell nearly everything I have built in the last two years. Oh,and they fly pretty well too!
So much for the horn blowing. The bottom lineis I really enjoy building, finishing and flyingR/C planes. And the forums are enjoyable as well. I am currently following or participating in approximately 8 at the present time.

Just a few references on P-47 variants :

I don't know how scale you plan to make your P-47 or even which variant you wish to model. When you do get ready to finish, Do some research on the web on marking of different fighter groups of WWII. There are about 15 surviving P-47's and requesting pictures of closeup details and panel lines, markings and things like hinge detail can be obtained if one were to contact the facility or owner. Explain that you are a scale modeler and would really like to finish your model in as much detail of their Full scale as possible. Flattery does yield results. Lots of luck with your project.

Looking at these rear gear doors from Wylie Warbirds. Does anyone know if they will fit the kit built or just the ARF?

My cousin works with Butch Schroeder in Danville IL, Butch owns Hairless Joe pictrured below. I won't be going to Danville until early next summer, but if someone has specific questions or needs pics at least we have a direct source.
