Top Flite Giant P-47 Build

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
I was flying that model with G 45 first, but P 47 was underpowered... With G 62 it fly very nice. My opinion is that any engine more than G 62 will be over powered. DA 85 sure...
Interesting is that at same time I have biggest CMP Zero 2100 mm wingspan, which was almost same weight - 12 kg. G 45 was more than enough for that model...
I fly now my Meister Scale Thunderbolt with Evolution 80GX. Don't forget that is 1/5 scale model, 102" wingspan and it's 22 kg...
Here is a video of that combination... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mI5DZ...ature=youtu.be

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
I'd like to take the time to say thanks to ALL of you here who share your ideas and encouragement.
This really helps me stay motivated, especially when I get bogged down.
As my plane sits. I am at 24lbs. Zenoah G-62, No glass or paint yet.
I debated whether to go DLE 55 or G-62 and opted for the G-62 because I knew I would
need nose weight. Just easier to do by bolting the engine on and not having to pour/bolt
lead in the nose. (Even more critical on short nose WW1 aircraft.)
Gary, Your build has really taken shape in the past few weeks and is a piece of flying art.
Are you going to do something with the canopy?
Easiest solution is throw it aside and get one from Yellow aircraft if they are still around.
Or you can go this route if you want to put in the effort. Probably not to hard to do after
you put some air time on her either.

For sure. I would wish at least one trip to this great event for all my fellow modelers.
To have the privilege to compete in it along side so many famous modelers is the stuff dreams are made of.
Cool thing is, in the Pro / Am class, models like the subject of this thread could and do compete.

That would be a dream of mine, perhaps someday I can make that a reality. Not with this bird though, too many major details that I left off. I said earlier in the thread this is a practice plane for when I really do the one I want. A Don Smith 1/4 scale. I have to build me a new shop first though just so I can maneuver that monster around.
Nice photo Mirce, do you plan to make the trip back this year?
Mike, My first choice was a G-62, it is the best engine choice for this air-frame without a doubt. But, at the time the DLE55 was a more practical choice for me financially. Also to get the fit in the cowl like I wanted, I was going to need to get the carb adapter so it wouldn't stick out the side, more money. So I'll just add the weight and live with it.
I need to put the white down on the cowl soon, hopefully in the next day or so. I need a couple of days for the liquid mask to set completely so I can start drawing out the checkerboard and cutting the mask this weekend.
Here comes the part that I have been dreading for over a year....

I finished up my radial engine this evening. That was a fun little project, and I had a ball sifting through all my junk finding pieces that would work. Besides the casting from FTE, I think I have another $2-$3 in K&S aluminum tube.[8D]
The ignition wires are from an old 72mhz receiver antenna, I made the ignition distributor ring from small push-rod tube, spark-plugs are brass servo mounting eyelets, and where the ignition wires connect to the spark-plugs is small aluminum tube with a 2/56 nut screwed onto it.
A great article from Fly RC mag. was provided with the engine from FTE, it gave some great tips on how to dress it up really nice.

Glassing is all done....
Now we need some of that Texas weather up here in Ohio so that I can start priming and laying the panel lines....
Great job on the radial Gary as usual. I like the idea of the eyelets for the spark plug connection, very ingenious!

Looks good Fabio. Mines almost ready to start glassing. I never did it before but somebody in the club is going to help me. Should I attach the oil coolers and supercharger before glassing or after?

Little story on that subject, I hope you enjoy. I had a customer over visiting my shop. He was asking all sorts of questions about how I do things, and I had a bunch of things laying around because I was working on his cockpit, but I noticed him focusing on a table next to me. Finally he asked "I just have to ask you, what do you use the Tinactin foot powder for?". You see, I had a can of the stuff sitting on the table next to me with all the various glues I was using. I answered, "oh, I spray it in my work boots". He felt stupid, I was amused, and we both had a good laugh over it.

I will attach mine right now after glassing. I will use epoxy which will bond to the epoxy and glass already on the fuse.
We still have to try to maiden both birds together. If the weather warms up a little it will take not too long to be primed up and ready for lines.
post a couple of pics when you can, I would love to see your progress.

Looking good Fabio! Hope we get to see it in primer soon.
Hey Gary, I was watching this video, and noticed you commented on it, Do you run the fuel pump and the rest of the "recommended accessories" on the Moki in your Corsair? Do you think that is what was causing this one to loose power (not running a fuel pump), just curious. Shame to see something like this to go down because of an issue with the motor. Oh, and what appears to be a downwind landing.
