I've got the ARF. Studied putting the 85 on it but it was way too long, even if I took the isolation mount off and hard mounted it. I guess the ARF and the kit are very different in the engine box length or you guys are cutting the box down when building? Anyway, it flies surprisingly well on the DLE 55 I ended up going with and my finished weight came out below 24 pounds minus fuel but still, if I could put an 85 on it without surgery on the ARF engine box, I'd still it. Good job those that are. (yeah, I have the 'skills and experience' to mod the ARF box, just not that motivated too now that it's flying so well...)

You are right to use the 55 on the ARF as installing the DLE85 turns it into a kit build as you have some seriously mods to do, the easiest is to move the cowl forward as this helps in balancing too.

My kit was an old one and no alterations were done to the box, it is 12+ years old.

It almost has me thinking that the lengthened the motor box due to them coming out so tail heavy... I built mine off the drawings and can take measurements if anyone would like them..

You most definitely have a diferent kit then the current kit, ARF and RTC as they fit the DLE55 with no mods what so ever. You would have to do mods on your kit to fit a DLE55

there is no way I could fit the 85 in my kit build or the RTC without cutting the firewall or moving the cowl, interesting

on the edge of my seat to see how it turns out

This is with the 5/8" balsa they call out to round the front of the fuse at F-1. I'm going to add that then mount the cowl.. If I need to add more balsa to get the look I want, I will add it then..

Jimbo, one of us is in an alternate univers nothing makes sence as if you where to use a DLE55 you would have to build out the firewall at least 3/4" to 1" to get the cowle where you have it now.

this is stock and you can see the prop hub is sticking way out pulse the engine is high on the thrust line becouse the head is hitting the cowl.

This is where the cowl needs to be to keep the engine on the center thrust line and to clear the cowl so the head is not hitting and a 1/2" prop hub exstention is used to get the prop to clear the cowl, almost 1-1/2" forward

Is your engine on the center thrust line? I moved mine up 1/8" and still had to move the cowl 1-1/2" forward.

Maybe your engine box is smaller then the current kits.

Lucky you

Tony, this has me intrigued as well. I even went out of my way to make a three-quarter inch plywood ring as I was following in your footsteps thinking I had to do the same thing.

I'm heading out to have some cocktails with some friends, tomorrow we can try and figure out where the difference is..

Sounds good, I will measure from former #1 to the firewall to see what we have.

I am building the TF Giant p-47.Fuselage is built and sheeted. starting on the wings
I am thinking about using the DLE55 with the mile high electric starter. will need weight on
the nose with the 55 from what I have read,so why not make the extra weight useful.
I'm a sport flyer so I'm not going all out scale on it. building by the plans.will be putting
cockpit/pilot and dummy radial engine in it. haven't decided if i am going to cover it or glass
and paint. I built the 60 size GE P-47 yrs ago and glassed and painted it. came out great but even on the
60 size it was a lot of sanding.lol I hate sanding. thought about glassing and covering it with flite metal.

any input is appreciated
Thanks Roy

Just the a note for you folks using lighter engines up front......if you glass and paint the plane it will be very tail heavy. I have a g62 up front and I had to put plenty of lbs on the firewall to reach the correct cg.......just a friendly suggestion....

Roy Being you are building the kit and doing a sports build I would suggest moving the engine forward at least 1" this would be easy with a ply build up mount on the firewall and then move the end of the fuselage out too for the cowl. This will help a lot on the CG

good luck with your build.

Hounddog, if that was directed towards me, yes I still have it. Getting ready to kick off the third flying season with her. She has won several awards already and hope to bag a few more this year.

As long as you don't cake the resin on, you can glass this bird out. Mine came in at a respectable 29 pounds. I drilled lightening holes in the vert/horizontal stab ribs and it really helped in not having to add a ton of weight in the nose. A few onces saved back there adds up to a lot of onces not having to be added up front.
Also, I used the recommended method of mounting the engine on an isolation mount, it pushed my DLE55 out another 1/2-3/4 of an inch and really dampens the vibration on the airframe.

If there any near buy meets around 15 April I'd like to stop on my way through Texas back to Wisconsin for the summer.
Do U Frequent any one or more of these flying sites?

Our scale event is May 1st-2nd at Austin Radio Control. We will have a lot of scale planes on site, including a Don Smith B17 flown by the one and only Randy Larson.

I fly at ARCA and HCAM, ARCA will be having a few scale eventst starting in March

And as Gary mentioned the Ken White warbird and the big bird later in the year.

HCAM only has a fun fly here and there, no scale events. I haven't been to Apache pass, tried contacting them to see there schedule with no response so don't even know if there still operating.

A bunch of us will be going to bomber field, kingsbury, and a few other local Texas events in addition to the ones at ARCA.

I have an isolation mount from a DLE 85 that I was thinking about modifying to fit the DLE 55
and mount it to the P-47 to help take out some of the vibrations. That will move it forward around an inch.
will be a while until I get to that stage anyway.....still have to build the wings

TB,
My prints show a US 41 on a iso mount. Here is my DLE 85 on the print, you can see it's not far off at all.
I lucked out for sure, mine has a hell of a lot less work for the 85 than what y'all are going through..

I decided on how I will mount the cowl, I'm going to have my mounts come off the motor box with internal screws. Two mounts on top and one each on the sides, those screws will access from the back. Two mounts on bottom will access through the SC air intake..
That's the easy part, building them will be a treat..lol
I never liked how they mount the cowl with the mounting blocks visible and had always planned on doing mine different.
This is the last of the major construction on my bird, then it's on to the finishes!!

Hi Guys
On both my 47 and Corsair I used a piece of 7/16 steel plate instead of the ply for the soft mount with G-62's and only had to add about 2 to 3 oz and did that with steel shot in the chin of the cowl's.

Jimbo, I have a brand new JTEC muffler for the DLE85 do you want it? I'm getting ready to list it on RCU in the next week, still waiting for it. This is the more compact one for a kit build as I will use the larger one for my RTC build, I'm scraping my kit build and going to build the Meister.

You're in luck, I just opened a scrap yard. You can drop your "scrap" 24/7

Ok I may just do that if OKC does not take it. Don't you already have two, one finished and another scraped unbuilt one????
