Balsa USA Fly Baby Bipe
#51
JHays,
Awesome job on the fly baby. Have you maidened her yet? I notice from your photos you collect kits much the way I do. I have not built a stick built in years. I am thinking of putting together a BUSA kit this winter maybe a Spad? First I have to complete my 1/3 scale Great Planes Pitts Special. I have only been sitting on that ARF for about 9-10 years now! I noticed a Christen Eagle on your bench, is that the 1/3 scale bird from Great Planes? Oh, the T-craft looks pretty awesome as well!

I am back guys, took some time off with the Fly Baby. Got back into full scale flying. Bought a 1972 C150 and got my biannual flight review done. Still working on the 1940 Taylorcraft restoration and now finally finished this Fly Baby. I bouth this old kit at an auction about 10 years ago and worked on it on and off over the years. Funny thing is in the kit it had the original credit card receipt from the original owner and the Balsa USA receipy a well dated 1987, so this bird is already 30 years old and has not had a flight yet.
Here are some of the latest pics. Still need to do an engine run and tune up then I will test fly it when a nice day is in the forecast. Hope you all like it.

The plane looks awesome! Balsa USA located just north and east of where I am located. I understand you can still pick up a plane and get a tour of the facility. I am thinking of picking up a BUSA kit and building it next winter. The Spad XIII is a really nice kit that I do not see that often at local fields, but that Fly Baby Bipe is very impressive too!

JHays,
Beautiful workmanship and a gorgeous airplane!! Congratulations.
Tell me, assuming you used the current version of Monocote, how
did you like it? It performed nicely for you. Also, is the cowling painted
with Lustercote? Nice color match. I may trouble you with a few more
questions via PM, if you don't mind.
Thanks.

The monokote i used on the project was fantastic, no issues. But Monokote is a funny product, last project I did was a Extra 230 from Ace RC aNd I used Orange, navy blue and white. The blue and white was great but the orange was crap! not sure why that is.
I think the light monokote is bad, the havier stuff is much better, you can feel the thickness when you work with is.
the paint was Rustoleum gloss cranberry, yes perfect match!
send me any questions, I'll be happy to help.
good luck on your project

What ever happened to JHAY's fly baby bipe? Did you finish it? Fly it? Just got a kit and will be starting it in a day or two. Had a fly baby in 84 when the kit was 99 bucks! bought it ready to fly with an evra 190 roap start! Really! Had a pully as a prop washer! Real pig! But flew. Paid 250.00 for it.
Plan to put an OS320 pegasus converted to gas! aught to be nice. Get back to me soon.

yes the Fly Baby is finished and flies great.
Mine was build from a 1987 kit that I picked up at an auction about 10 years ago.
A 320 will be a great choice of engine.
Let me know if you have any question on your build. Be happy to answer any question.

Thanks buddy. I think mine is of that vintage also. Given to me by my 86 year old friend. Been after him for ten years and now I have it . Don't think he has time to build it so it is up to me to do it before he tipps over. I owe him that much.

Howdy, Looks like this thread has been dormant for a while! I just wanted to say GREAT JOB! I really like the o-rings for attaching the javelins on the flying wires! (I'm gonna borrow that idea on mine) I have 3 Balsa USA Fly Baby biplanes, and one BUSA Fly Baby monoplane. (Yes, I really like them!) Kudos on a really snazzy job! Your other planes look great, too! Blue Skies!
