Royal/Maratuka KI-43 Oscar "Hayabusa" Build

RE: Royal/Maratuka KI-43 Oscar
Thanks for the update, it cleared everything up for me. I have a few Royal kits which I will consider converting to electric. Particularly the twins.

More work on the wings, this is where I will be installing the aileron servo. I also sheeted the corner area over W-19, and W-17, and glued in TE W-23.

Flap assembly:
This part is not in the instruction manual, but I decided to add flaps to slow the plane down on landing. I am just scratch building this part, and I'm adding balsa blocks, and basswood to support the flap section to the wing.

I've got the flaps completed on both wings. I also went ahead and covered most of the fuselage with the 1/8" sheeting provided, leaving the bottom for last so I can install most of the electronics and air tank with ease. I also received the Solartex covering, and covered the horizontal stab. I think the covering is going to work out well when I apply the acrylic paint over it. My next step is to finish the wing and install the retracts.

I was able to glue the two wing halves together, and glue the LE wing support W-27. I also went ahead and installed the retracts, the retracts are supported by two blocks extending from one rib to the other.

Updating my build; I've glued the LE's and both W-28 blocks, I've also added the front dowels, ran the aileron and flap extensions, also the airlines. Then I finished gluing the bottom sheeting of the wing.

Got both W-10 wing tips glued in place, and cut the retract opening on the bottom of the wing. Once the wing tips were dried, I sanded the LE and the wing tips. I also dry tested the supplied gear door just for looks.

Wing Saddles:
From The Instructions; Next F-23 and F-24 are added to form the wing saddles. Fit the wing to the fuselage at this time carving and sanding, when necessary, to insure a proper fir. Then add F-25( wing Fillets). F-26's are wing fairing blocks between F-7 and F-14 on the fuselage bottom.
I've glued F-23,F-24, and, F-25. I haven't glued in the F-26's yet. I did glue in F-22, which is the antenna base support. I will be shaping the saddles and fillets tomorrow.

Thanks, Ive got both wing saddles and fillets sanded. I also used filler between the gaps and sanded that down as well. I went ahead and glued in both F-26 wing fairing blocks.

Yes, typical on royal kits.
Getting back to the build, I trued the Horizontal stab with the wing at 0 degrees according to the plans. I trued the Horizontal stab to the wings at level. Then I started to build the rudder.
The instructions for the rudder and verticle stabs are as follows:
Refer to the Isometric drawings and begin by assembling the two R-1's The sheet covering), R-2, 3, 4, 5(ribs) with R-6(block) and R-7 the leading edge. The Vertical fin is assembled in a like manner beginning with V-1 (sheet), V-2, 3, 4, 5(ribs), V-6 (leading edge) V-7, 8(braces) V-9, V-10 (trailing edges). An alternate method would be to assemble V-6, 7, 8, and 9 over the plan, carefully centered, then adding V-2, 3, 4, 5(ribs) after the basic assembly is dry, then finally adding the V-1's and V-10. Notice that the sheet balsa has a compound curve at the tip. You will find that dampening the outside with a moist cloth will ease the job. Tape(if dry) and/or clamps are superior to pins in this process.

Might not work too well with a sharp trailing edge, but another way to hold the balsa down on a compound curve while drying is to use an Ace bandage.

Then I glued in the TB3 front Leading adge of the horizontal stabilizer, and I gued this to the fuselage, checking alignment as well.

After this I channeled out an area on the rear of the Horizontal stab where the elevator control rod is going to be supported, and I glued it to the HS and then adding TB4 to lock it in place.

I didn't feel that the verticle stabilizer was going to be well supported just glued on top of TB1, so I used a couple of dowels to give it extra support.

Then it was just a matter of gluing the vertical stab in place and ensuring proper alignment. Using a thread guide attached to the front af the fuselage helped.
