RE: building board
Being I live in a small 3rd floor apartment, having a permanent build table was not an option. And neither was toting a chunk of steel upstairs an option. [:@] Being able to tear everything down to make room for my other interests, I need to be able to pick everything up, so I use a 2'x4' fold up table, a hollow core door topped with a ceiling tile. This way I can lean the door against the wall, fold up the table and now I have room for other things. Like building a motorized bicycle. [8D]

That airfield models is an excellent site and great resource. I was inspired to create similar magnetic hold-downs for my board, but I think mine are easier to make and use.

RE: building board
OK.........you guys have gone and done it. I have a 10' x 16' shop with a 16"bench. I've had it for 20 years and I'm now ready for a change. I can't walk around my bench so I'm going to tear it out and install some of those prefab cabinets from Lowe's. Then I'm going to build a 2'x8' bench on casters so I can put it where I want it and be able to walk around it. Good news is that my wife is all for it.............she says we're retired and we have a little extra money and it would be a fun project for me............what am I too do!!!!!!

Thank's Tequesta. When the photo server gets back to working I'll post a better photo.
I have used every type of table top mentioned here and then some. The metal top is by far the best to me. Mine is 2' x 6' expandable to 2' x 8'. And as mentioned above cleaning is easy, justscrape it off.

Yea Robert, nice Waco. I meant to mention that on the Waco thread.
I used 1/4" baltic birch ply for my hold downs. You might find scraps at local cabinet shops. Buy more magnets than you think you'll need. 100 magnets won't go that far. A magnetic build board is an investment, like any other tool. It takes a bit of time and effort to set up, but once done, you'll wish you had done it earlier.

I use a 24'' wide door with ceiling tiles attached with a few spots of 3M 77 spray. On top of this I have a 6' x 2' x 1/8'' neoprene mat. The mat keeps the tiles from spalling and helps hold pins in tight.

I know I'm digging up a bit of an old thread but I'm in the process of setting up a new shop and I'd like to make a magnetic building board. I need to try to figure out where to source the steel top to put on my workbench. I live outside of a smallish sized city (winston-salem, nc). I know the harware/lumber stores around here wouldn't have a piece of steel that big. Any suggestions on where to look?

Yeah check out sears they have a stainless table top that I used for magnets and it's awsome. They also have the workbenches that go with it. I'm sure you have a sears close somewhere. My magnets stick great to mine.

I thought magnets did not stick to stainless. I know there is one type that it sticks too but thought it did not stick very well.

Some stainless is ferrous and some isn't. Think about your stainless refrigerator. If you want to pm me your email address I can send you a video of how mine does with magnets

magnets will work on low grade stainless, very little nickle in it and it will rust. A good grade stainless like 316 or 304 a magnet will not stick to. I use a 1/8 x 24" x 96" metal plate cost $70

I picked up my metal top for buy building board today. I ended up looking up "sheet metal" in the yellow pages and found several shops. $70 for a 36x80" sheet. Looking forward to using it.
