Six internal braces, 3 on each side were first glued to the leading edge and trailing edge was glued on as well. I used medium CA to glue the braces but used Premium wood glue to join both end of leading edge to the trailing edge. Placed some weights to keep the framework straight and level on the foam building board.

Glad to see your on your way on the tail.

I just pulled my Cub out to replace the engine. The engine that was in it broke a mounting lug. The new engine should be here next week.

Later!!

New with the old or old with the new stabilizer.

Apart from center main brace structure, new stabilizer is almost complete.

I reviewed another build thread and didn't see and truss structure built into him stabilizer, so I'm reconsidering wither I make those or leave it as is.

My only worry is, if ever model had to do nose dive at higher altitude and pull up again, how would this structure sustain the G forces on it....

HA HA, I told you so that it's not a big deal for me to make newer tailplanes and flying feathers....

Tonight i'll tackle making the fin's structure, I don't feel good about using the older one, mind you, I have fixed the warp on it, but still it look so ugly and yuky!

Hello to all my Cub brothers! As promised, here's the update on the maiden flight of the old Goldberg Anniversary Cub that my wife Chris built as a Navy NE-1. After the horizontal snow that we had here on Friday afternoon, Saturday was a different story. Low 40's and light winds. Perfect day for a maiden flight. The pictures are as follows: first me prepping the plane before the flight, then the takeoff as it was slipping a bit before I got it trimmed. Third a low pass, fourth the proud builder after the flight (Cub Brotherhood # 175 1/2) and last the Iceman at his post ready for action! Final assessment: a bit of right aileron trim and about three clicks of down elevator had it flying like a trainer. Those that look close will notice the port wing strut detached from the fuse. No negative impact and no issues landing. Repairs are already complete. As for the landing, close the throttle and watch it land itself. This lady can build my planes anytime! 80.5 inch stretched wing and weighs in at 8 pounds. Turnigy 42-48-650 turning a 13x6.5 prop. 5s 3000 mah lipo putting out 800 watts at 45 amps. Goes like heck if I want it to, but floats along nicely when throttled back. Nav lights, but it was still a little too bright to get a good effect. Should have waited about a half-hour for the sun to go down a bit. We have another giant-scale military airshow performer here for sure. Time to open a cold one and celebrate. Thanks for all the support!

The tail surfaces should hold up well but I do strongly recommend using functional tail brace wires. I made the ones on my 1/3 Cub out of 4-40 rod.

Earlier today, I couldn't wait and wanted to see how new stab looks and will fit on model's fuselage. Well have a look as I think it looks great, true and straight....

I was thinking to use wire struts from 6 that came off from the original build, but if you are saying to use 4-40 rod struts, hmm I have think about them as they will have to be made then....

I suppose they will hold tailplane together must stronger then wire ones.

Yeah couple close up ones would be nice to see, how did you made the hard points with in the stab and the fin?

Are you r struts on top and bottom of the stab, plus on either side of the fin are mounted on single attachment points, ie: 1 screw is holding to together?

Yes there is a 4-40 bolt going all the way thru all the surfaces. I prilled thru the surface and installed a brass tube for the bolt to go thru. This keeps from chrushing the balsa when the bolts are tightened.

I will go take some pics and post shortly.

I use the 4 40 as well. Very nice and solid. I certainly like waco nuts brass sleeve idea. I will do that for now on as well. Thanks.

Here are some pics of my tail wire installation, I use this setup on all my large planes.

The straps and rod ends are from Dubro. You can get solder on and threaded ends. One end of the rod has a solder end and the other is threaded so they are adjustable for tension.

Hope this helps!!

Hey waco, is that a cut clevise? I do that too some times. Funny, that's exactly how I set up all of my large planes too. Even down to the pull pull hardware it looks like. I'm sure it's all the same that most use.thanks, Steve

Mine is a quarter scale with the 4-40 flyin wires, same as Anthony's solder and threaded. First is the hole with an 1/8" brass inserted. Second is my Cub but I just went with strait 4-40 rods and clevises, third is my Waco with 4-40 shaped and more scale connectors.

OK I got it guys, thanks for posting ur close up pictures to see it better.

Now have anyone of you guys ever thought about making stabilizer pivotable as it's on actual Cub, S Cub and now on Super legends. So incidence could be changed if needed to be by using mechanical mechanism or by using a servo in combination.
I have been thinking about it but now sure if it's going to be practical or not.

Yes siree! If you''ll look closely at the above Waco pic you can see the slot. It was a cool feature but once set, the novelty wore off. I ended up epoxying it in place and removing the unneeded weight of all the components and servo.

The Nelitz 1/3 Cub has an adjustable stab on the plans. It is ground adjustable only. I do not see any need to build an adjustable stab. These planes fly so good as they are. Just set your balance at 28-30% MAC and you are good to go.

Later!!

Small progress update:

Stab is almost complete, ran out of 1/4" dowel stick or it would have been completed tonight.

We'll make line drawings of elevators, Fin and rudder tonight and will build those In next couple of days.

Resurrecting the original rudder....

As mentioned before, I am looking into resurrecting the original rudder at this time. Took off the sheeting that was on both sides of it, fixed the tip from sorta pointed tip to more roundish shape to replicate true profile as much as I can without following any plans.

Internal frame is in good shape, tip section and a small section from the bottom has been cut to be re-fabricated with newer wood. Whole frame has been lightly sanded to clean off old glue and remaining wood chips from sheeting removed.
All the joints will be reinforced to make sure extra strength is given, new Robart point hinges will be installed.

Fin

I looked into saving the original fin but its gone beyond use, so newer line drawings were made to make new fin from scratch.
