I use 1/8 " and do 3 or 4 wraps .. It kind of depends on how tight you wrap it.. You need to experiment till you get the feel.. It is quite cheap so you can afford to play with it a bit.. I gave up on the o rings because they broke when I wasent even using them and this stuff never breaks .

I know this forum is under the Kit section but I was looking for a 1/4 scale clip wing cub ARF and I can't find one. I have a 1/5 scale full wing cub that I like and I would like to move to 1/4 scale. Does anyone know of a manufacture that makes a 1/4 scale clip wing cub ARF?

I was looking at the Hangar 9 TC and it is nice but its not a cub but the closes I can find. I don't really like the World Models one ether. Looks like there is a good opportunity for one of the ARF companies to make a good 1/4 scale clip wing cub.

I have the TC too and that's why I mentioned it.. It is not a Cub but it is sure a fun plane and it is well put together... You would really enjoy it .. I also have 3 1/4 scale cubs that all have the full wing span .. The new Hanger 9 PA18 ARF is very similar construction to the Taylor Craft ..Both of mine have the G26 gas motor . The Taylor Craft is much more aerobatic although it will slow down and float in for a nice landing ..It is a very manageable plane but quite fast when you open it up...Check out a few reviews on the plane.. Its certainly not cheap.. I bought mine as the bind and fly which is usually $1299.00 but I got it on sale for $999.99 .. You can get a version that comes with no motor or servos or receiver etc. quite a bit cheaper but if you need to go out and buy that stuff you will end up paying the same anyway ..

Sounds like a great airplane! I will have to add it to my list for future consideration. Right now I have too many projects underway. I have a short kit, cowling, and retracts for a 1946 Globe Swift GC-1A. I also should receive in about another week ttwo short kits I have being cut, 1937 prototype Ryan SC-M and a 1938 production Ryan SC-W. Guess which one is my avatar?

Back to work again!!!

Making both elevators now.

First line drawing was made, basically just proper outline drawing.

Balsa strips were cut from the sheeting into the size needed. Soaked in the Windex for 25 mins, then
started to lay each strip one by one against the inside curve of the pins. This is helping these strips to pick up right shape as they dry. Presently held in place. Tomorrow I will glue these together as officially laminated trailing edge.

Just a quick tip to pass along to all. If you are like me, you have a box, drawer, or something full of servo wheels and horns. Check that you have the correct horn for the servo. Not all servos use the same spline on the horns. This past weekend I almost lost my cream 1/4 scale cub due to this issue. I was coming out of a turn and the cub did not want to level out and then snapped up on a knife edge. I'm running true scale ailerons on the plane with a pull pull system fed from a pulley. Last spring when I redid the setup, the wheels I picked out of the box snapped on the servo and thought it was a good fit. Well after a year of flying and no issues it hit me. For both ailerons I could hold the surface, and move the stick, the wheels were slipping on the shafts.

Some talk on springs or other options then the O rings. I'm also looking at different options. One issue with the robart gear is they are designed for a standard Cub with a weight around 14 to 16 pounds. My cream cub is around 19 pounds. If I just use the 4 O rings on each side as it is shipped , my plane is to heavy for them, I have to add two extra o rings to each side.

All three strips are now laminated together with wood glue.
Last nights preforming of these strips really helped, no need to add lots of pressure with pins, due to the like shape, all 3 strips sat in together very nicely with medium amount of glue vs heavy bead.....

Cub man I have not had good luck with the O rings.. I found they broke even when not in use.. Also as you found I had to use different amounts of O rings for support. When I was purchasing my O rings I found you could get some that were a little heavier but it was the same story , they broke often and need to be replaced but when I switched over to shock cord all my troubles went away.. I use 1/8 " and you can play with the tension and wraps till you get the feel.. Yours will probably use about 6 wraps ,4 finger loops , maybe even 8 wraps .. Shock cord is cheap and you can buy it at some hardware stores or maybe a dress shop.. Its not too hard to find.. Look it up on the net.. I can find it in Canada but I am not sure about if you have Home depot stores in the States etc. ... Anyway give it a try...It will only cost a few bucks and I bet you will never look back..

Here's where I got my shock cord:  http://www.rei.com/product/603003/shock-cord-18-inch  However, it looks as though they are out, at least on line.

I prevent the servo arm problem by sticking to one brand of servos with the exception to micros. With micros I keep one box from each brand to hold arms. It does help I don't build anything over 20 lbs. or with a wingspan over 86".

Ya I tend to keep my servo arms separate too because I ran into an arm I could not get on to a servo .. I think it was Spektrum to Hi Tec but anyway I realized that they were a wee bit different and you could not tell by looking so from then on Spektrum goes in the Spektrum box and Hi-Tec goes in the Hi-Tec box and Futaba in the Futaba and so on ... They each have 3 or 4 arms so you need one of those boxes with the compartments I also keep the little rubber grommets separate too .. I don't know why they don't make them universal...

First one is for you FlyerInOKC specifically......lolzzz

One trailing edge is done and waiting for other to get done, in few hours both will be ready to be glued on the dowel leading edge followed by internal structure including trusses.

Hopefully tonight most of the elevator will be built so all will be left to would be, leading n trailing edge round sanding, hinging and adding hard wood gusset for heavy duty control horn....

I added a strip of 1/16" ply inside the lam on my Cub when I built it because I felt it wasn't quite strong enough .. It really made a difference . a 3/8" wide strip of 1/16 ply bends easily to the shape of the inside and clamps in easily and probably doubles the strength ..It might be overkill but on the BUSA all the joints were in the same spots . there is 3 lams.. a 1/8 balsa , a 1/8 ply , then another 1/8 balsa .. I think they could have staggered the joints to make it stronger but the are all together .. That's why I added the strip of ply on the inside..

Here is the overview of the whole new stabilizer and both elevators.

Ran out of right size wood plus need another dowel to finish this section.

I don't want to make internal structure of the elevators with laminated strips of wood, that will add some what extra weight, not much but still...I know some of you will say "It won't be much or unnoticeable increase but I want to use virgin wood strips"

Once I add hardwood gussets for hinges on the inside of the dowel leading edge of the elevators, I will drill holes and sand the surfaces round on the LE of the stabilizer and TE of both elevators.
