I happened across a reference to a 30-year old article in Scale RCM that showed how one modeler converted a Goldberg Cub into an L-4. I thought that it might make for some interesting reading for some of the Cub Brotherhood. You can find that old thread at
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/kit-...l#post12480696 and I have attached the article here:

Thanks Cub Man!
I know there's been 1/4 Scale J-3 Cubs that's had the door & window cut out as an "afterthought". Once you do that your committed to completing the door/window modification. I have started doing the reinforcement, not sure if I understand all that the Cub Den has suggested doing, but I am going to try their suggestion, it's not going to be easy. Drilling along side the 5/32 wire, is almost imposable, I've tried. In fact, I'm thinking of soldering the reinforcement 1/8th piano wire to the 5/32 cabin wire. I'm not sure of doing that, but thinking of trying it. I'll take pictures as I go and post them here.
I would still like to hear from people that has done that or just any kind of reinforcing the area after cutting out the door/window area. Maybe some folks hasn't reinforced this area at all and the cub is still flying.
Let me know!

Gerry

Hello Igoren, so the cubs you have, did you build them and if you did, did you build in the door & window as per the plans instructions or added the door & window after the fuselage was built, as I did? The Sig kit 1/4 scale J3 Cub, has the print of the door & window on the plans, but no mention or instructions on how to go about building the door/window. I cut the door & window out, knowing I would be cutting some important bracing for the wing. You're saying there's no reinforcing necessary after cutting through the plywood reinforcements and at the windscreen area? Without adding some reinforcements after cutting these pieces out, I would be afraid to do a loop, for fear of loosing the wing.

Hello Brotherhood...

I'm looking for some help here and am turning to you so that hopefully I can get some assistance.

About a month ago, I inherited a partially built Cub with no plans, but most of the parts. I initially thought that it was a 1/5 Scale Sig Cub. A gentleman in another thread sent me some plans and cowls, but once I compared them I found that I was mistaken about the make of the plane. I have to return those plans and cowls to him.

I've since determined that the plane I have is a Great Planes 60-Sized Cub. I am looking for plans and a cowl if anyone in the Brotherhood happens to have them. I could scan your plans and return them (or compensate you) and the Cowl is available from Fiberglass Specialties. I could also use a pattern for the Windshields if there is anything like that out there...

Thanks for any help that you can lend,

Bob

So, from the Balsa USA plans, no extra bracing required per plans. All the structure is made of spruce. I have seen a few fly per plans build and fly fine. Now a few words from the Cub Man. Without any reinforcement, you are depending on some but to but glue joins for strength. I would say most of the strength come from the front wire support in the center of the wing and where the top section connects to the back of the cabin. Adding the 1/8 inch music wire adds so much strength to this area. For me personally, flying without the wire and relying on some but glue joins is scary. I will say in the 20 years my ¼ scale cub has been flying, I have had a few accidents that I know if the wire had not been in the cabin, I would have had to rebuild that area.

May I be added to your group?
I'm 70 yrs. old, been building & flying kit airplanes since I was 12 yrs old, but in those days, they were U-control. After getting out of the military in 1970, I started building RCs. Just a little about my early years of RC flying & build. In the last 20 yrs, I've been flying GP 60 size J 3 Cubs on floats. My current build is the Sig 1/4 scale J-3 Cub. I'm limited in space for building large RC planes, but I've always wanted to build a 1/4 scale cub. This is when I came to you for a little help when adding a door & window to my already built fuselage.
I did want to install a 5/32 wire as suggested, but install a 1/8 piano wire instead, I wasn't able to drill a 5/32 hole along side the already installed 5/32 cabin wire. So using the 1/8 wire after sanding, I soldered it to the cabin wire. I think this will do the trick, I hope. I have photos to share. I'm so sorry the photos are so big. I did cut a grove along the top for the 1/8 wire. after sanding and installing the wire, I 30 min. epoxy the wire in place, then sheeted over the wire to hide it. When I finished the 1/8 wire reinforcement, it's hard to see the soldered wire.
Thank you for your help, it was greatly appreciated!

I didn't attach photo
of the 1/8 wire just after it was soldered to the 5/32 cabin wire. I used a torch to make sure it got hot enough for the solder to adhere to the wires.

ITs just a straight section of wire with a S bend on one end and the other has a point on the tip. Place a rubber band on the top wing mount and set the wing on top. Next slide the rod thru the wing to lock the wing on to the mount. use the rubber band to loop in the S bend to hold the rod in place. let me know if you need a photo of the setup.

Default Spinner for 1/4 scale Super Cub?

I'm having a bit of trouble sourcing a spinner for mine. It has a Fiberglass Specialties cowl that can only take a small spinner, 1 3/4" or 2" at most. The trouble is the 20x6 maple prop I'm using has a big hub, about 1 11/16", which will pretty much fill up a small spinner. I'm sure somebody here has dealt with this issue. Thanks for any tips!

BTW, mine is a Sig kit, bashed into a PA-14 Family Cruiser, with Robart gear, 8" AirTop tires, and powered by a dieselized Super Tigre 2300. This is being built as a model of a full scale plane owned by a buddy of mine, and has a number of Alaska mods on it, which I'm trying to duplicate.

You need a prop hub and not a spinner. True Turn make a prop hub for cubs... Fits on the prop no cutout necessary.

Best

Thanks Rafeek,

It looks like the biggest one Tru Turn makes is 7/8" diameter. I'll use that if I get desperate!
