I have a 1/4 scale Pilot J-3 that I framed several years back. It is a very scale Cub when finished. I also had Swensen Specialties make a set of scale gear for it. A OS 1.20 twin 4-stroke is plenty of power for it. I like the E-flite PA-18 scale gear you have on your Sig 1/6 scale Cub. I ordered a set for my Sig 1/6 scale as well, as they are a perfect fit. I have a hanger full of PA-18's, PA-12's and J-3's, as NOTHING flies like a Cub. I only power mine with 4-strokes. There is no way I could bring myself to put a gas engine in any Cub, its just not right. [X(] : )

We sold the full scale J-3 Cub and it now is totally rebuilt (2010) and resides near Sherman, Tx. It was and is an awesome J-3 manufactured in 1945 in Loch Haven, Pa

You could install a DLE 30 in your 1/4 scale J-3 but it is over kill and you will have to cut the cowl a lot to make it fit. You will not need the extra power as the 20 actually has too much for the J-3. It will do aerobatics with the 20 and looks good in the cowl with only a hole for the exhaust and air inlets as well as air exits on the bottom. The 30 is also higher $$$. This is my 3rd 1/4 scale J-3. Getting ready to build a 1/3 Balsa USA J-3 soon.

Ok, time to get off my butt and and finish painting. BUT, anybody know of good decals that will stick to a koveral painted finish (warbird colors paint). I'm terrible at painting insignias so I want something to stick on that wont look bad. I need the star and bar with the red outline.

We do all sorts of signs, lettering and graphic presentations. Our experience is that vinyl cutting and multiple layers of registerd vinyl as you'd need for the multi coloured stars and bars have pretty much gone the way of the Dodo.

What's more common is a single piece item, printed on one layer in whatever design is required and cut to outline on the same machine that does the printing. Very much less labor involved and thus better rates too. Additionally, it allows you to handle photos and any combination of vector and pixel art in the same output.

Why not ask about using that process?

As far as staying on the model, that depends on the particular glue on the substrate. You need a material which can work in your application. There are many which work just fine. Be certain that you specify that requirement before making the graphics.

Good point. I wouldnt want a thick piece of decal stuck on the plane. I assumed it was one layer. I'll have to remember to ask about that and the glue. I sent an email to Callie-graphics. They stop at 1/5 scale on their WW2 product line up. Good looking product line though.
I'm thinking I'll need to do a clear coat, true?

Whenever I dope a fabric covered model, I finsih off with a clear coat following application of the graphics.

First, a light spay goes on to prevent destruction of the vinyl. Following that, you can get pretty heavy with a wet coat for great sheen without causing any damage.

The clear coat will also seal those troublesome areas where there are 90 degree cuts . No more little shar[ corners or edges lifting or getting dog eared.

Well guys I have 10 cubs as we speak, all except two are flyable and those are retired. I have a 1/3 scale in the works. I have one that someday I will bring into service. It is a twin fuse cub. I have seen some talk on rib stitching a few post back. Full page on my site on this. I will say on the L-4 I just cut a boat load of strips of fishing line and had glued them to the plane and then covered it with pink-it tape.

It flew great, about 90" winspan, got the idea after seeing the Wagner cub and having two kits laying around - http://www.twinnavion.com/oddballs.htm The two ST 40's were almost too much and made me do things (such as snap rolls) that ultimately ended with one wing folding. It was a fun plane and fairly easy to build, but will use carbon fiber on wingspar next time ;-)
