Hey, thanks!! I think this may have worked, although it's giving me double images. I think she did an awesome job for her first attempt at kit-building. Dave

RE: ***CUB BROTHERHOOD***
She looks great, superb job done by ur wife......you can easily see extra wing sections added. Did you added extra ribs on inboard or our board sides of each wing?
So it's 4" on CG Cub, would it be 8" on 33% Cub if it was to be done as this one but a lot bigger in scale....
I'm glad Imageshack worked for you, always pleasure to help out where ever I can.

RE: ***CUB BROTHERHOOD***
She added one extra bay on the outboard end of each wing right at the tip. The idea for that is to allow the plane to qualify for giant scale status while minimally disrupting the overall scale outline. It's only 2 inches and that came out to exactly one extra rib bay at each tip. She used balsa blocks and basswood rail for the leading and trailing edges and top and bottom spars respectively and spliced them using thin light ply as a backing. If it ever quits snowing here we'll post the maiden and update the Brotherhood. Keep 'em flying! Dave

Here are my CUB-s
Because of 500 error you can see pictures on my local RC Forum
First one was ModelTech Super Cub,Wing Span: 81 Inches (2057mm)
http://www.rcfly4um.org/index.php/to....html#msg22870
Next model was scratch build J3 CUB, clipped wing. 1/5 scale.
http://www.rcfly4um.org/index.php/to....html#msg41800
And new one is 1/4 J3 (build is in progress). It is scratch build, starting from drawings.

Well until this error situation dosen't end, we will have to use other picture uploading sites to use for our benefits on here. It's very unfortunate and looks like new site owner Internet brands Inc dosen't give a hoot to fix issues on RCuniverse.....

RE: ***CUB BROTHERHOOD***
I have started to restore this big Cub, started with left wing that had damaged or missing wing ribs.
Initially I used root rib to make my first rib template, then used that template to cut newer ribs from 3/32" balsa sheet.
2 full ribs were needed, 1 sub rib and then 3 ribs were damaged that needed sections to be re-fabricated and attached to them.
It was a long task, plus my back is acting up again, so I worked slowly. Started from inboard of the wing to wards out board, basically did one rib at a time.
At this time all the ribs in the right wing are done that needed addressed either by newer sections added or whole rib fabricated out of balsa sheet. In other wards scratch built the ribs!.
2nd rib after main root rib has to be doubled up as it take the loads of the wing mounts, wing mounts are attache to this rib, passing through root rib into the fuselage.
I would add pictures of all stage once this error 500 problem with the site is fixed!
Important Question!:
Can anyone who have built these 1/3rd scale or 33% Piper Cubs tell me if there is aerodynamic washout built into these wings????

RE: ***CUB BROTHERHOOD***
+1. I was going to say, I never built a 3rd scale cub, but none of the other cubs I've built had any washout. But I figured I'd wait till some one who knows for sure answered first. Good luck with your big ***** cub. Can't wait to see maiden vid or at least hear of it. Isn't it funny how you get excited for other people's planes on here.steve.

RE: ***CUB BROTHERHOOD***
Well I had a good long conversation with Balsa USA's tech department customer service's Dave, him and i talked about certain features on my models and it clearly said it's not a Balsa USA design.
There is no aluminum on my model where as dash on BUSA big Cub is on aluminum plate, wing on mine dosen't plug into sides of fuselage as BUSA's does, not the horizontal stab is designed as BUSA's does there.
Even the landing gear is not BUSA's design....He suggested to look as Bud Nosen cub but Bud's cubs are 1/4 scale not 1/3 scale models.
He did said, there is no need for washout on these Cubs as they fly beautifully on flat straight wings. I told him acrual ones have 2.5 degrees of washout but he said, I can add if I want to but there is no need for it.
So there it is, mine is not BUSA's 1/3 scale Cub model. the only 2 areas that come close to BUSA design are firewall and and the cowl, rest up to this point is not there design.

I did not build washout into my 1/3 AMR Cub but I set the aileron's up where they are both just above center when the aileron's are neutral. The Full scale Cub is rigged this way as well at least on all of them I have looked at.
My Cub fly's extremely well and is a joy to fly. Several guys in my club have commented that it is the most scale flying plane they have seen. It takes a good bit of rudder to coordinate the turns and it will fly really slow.
Later!!

RE: ***CUB BROTHERHOOD***
Well here is another thing. Tail dragger landings vs Tri gear landings....what i mean is, when we land tail dragger model not much flair is induced on a model's pitch before touch down but when you have tri-gear model landing, even being high wing, a lot more flair is induced on it before touch down. Now i'm thinking since my Cub will be trike and will have longer flair on landings, how beneficial washout will be if I add that on the wings now, say 2 to 2.5 degrees, coz actual Cubs do have between 2 and 3 degrees of wash out or they don't fly good and have more chances of tip stalling.
Full size guys discussing it:
http://www.supercub.org/forum/showth...ging-question&
2ndly,
I don't know about your Cubs but this sure dosen't have shear webbing between both spars, top and bottom ones!, to make these wing less prone to twisting, I'm seriously considering adding webbing to both front and middle spars, this will hold the wing's position with built in washout plus with not twist so much while flying and will be less pressure on wing struts also. What do you guys think about adding shear webbing....

RE: ***CUB BROTHERHOOD***
If it were me, I would would rig the wing the way you want it with the struts and then shrink the covering with the wings mounted. The struts on my Cub are functional and I had to be cearful when building the struts not to induce a warp in the wings with the struts. I can adjust the struts and add washout as well if desired. Adding shear webd will not do much to keep the wing from warping and you will just be adding weight. The Cub will fly best as light as possible.
I do wheel landings and also flar my Cub for a 3 point landing with no tendency to drop a wing at all. The aileron's remain effective all the way to the stall. If you are not carful you may hurt the flying characteristics of the Cub by rigging it too far from where it was designed.
If you set your aileron's up as I described you are basically adding washout to the wings.

RE: ***CUB BROTHERHOOD***
After talking to few guys on here and locally plus including tech support rep at Balsa USA, I have decided not to add washout on these wings and continue as they are designed. I'm sure after certain people have said. it will be ok even as in tri-gear set up. What i'm doing now is adding shear webs of both front and middle spars, these will give a lot of strength in these big wings and they should be able to handle any abuse given to this model in its future life.
I am also seriously considering changing the wing to fuselage mounting system on this model soon as both wings are ready for covering.
What I like to see now are different ways how bigger Cubs wings join or fasten to the sides of fuselage. Can you guys with 1/3rd scale or 33% Cubs post some pictures of ur models fromm this area, those will help me decide with
system will be best for my model's application.
I'm also looking for plans of 1/3rd scale Cub or from 33% Cubs, Anyone?
All I really need is the complete drawings of the tail section to help in fabricating new horizontal stabilizer, fin, rudder and both elevators.

Now that pictures are being uploaded and being displayed once again, here is some recap showing the condition of this model on the first inspection and wash of the fuselage.

Very cool Props4ever! It's interesting seeing a restore. I hope I'll never have to do one to my Cub. Almost finished with the build.... not sure if i want to fly it....
Take care,

RE: ***CUB BROTHERHOOD***
Yeah, that is a real lot of work. Is it just me, or do the wings seem to be a little light on framing? I don't know, I've never built a 3rd scale. Good luck.
