Slikspan tissue and dope, the main covering I used all the way through the 70's. I can even remember using Mac Tac on some CL planes. It was a vinyl shelving paper with an adhesive backing that turned out to be fuel proof. It was rather heavy though.

My very first airplane was a rubber band powered Guillows Cessna 170 covered with colored tissue paper. I didn't know enough to water down the glue and paint the frame; I spent 2 days cutting out little squares and rectangles to fit the spaces made by the ribs, and gluing the edges down with Elmer's on a toothpick. It was lumpy-looking, but it flew several times in the front yard before the invisible hand scooped it up and deposited it in the pond on top of the hill. By the time I swam out and got it to shore it was a soggy mess of shreds and sticks and I was hooked. I recovered it in the same painstaking fashion over the next few days but the balsa twisted as it dried and ripped the paper in places and it never really flew again; always rolling into the grass after a few feet.

That plane occupied a place of honor on a shelf in my bedroom for almost 20 years before being lost in a house fire... of all the things I lost that day, it and a very precious book are the only things I still remember.

Guillows? I started W/the 10 cent "Comet" models that had the ribs/formers printed in blue ink & the stringers in sheets that were slit except for the last 1/4" on either end.

I used the blades for my Dad's safety razor to cut out the parts.

Nice job ARUP... the Taylor J2's are a nice looking Cub... I like the silver and light blue scheme.

Here is A SOURCE FOR SCALE CONTINENTAL A-65-8 DUMMY ENGINE KITS and here is A THREAD ABOUT BUILDING THE KIT & adding additional scale details.

I have one in 1/5 scale & the resulting scale realism is astounding.

Is the windshield & bracing detail the same for the J-2 & J-3? I've been looking for some images & the pix in ARUPs post are what I was looking for.

I have a question that might spark some debate. I was going to convert a Sig Anniversary Cub into a L-4. In talking this over at the Field, one guy stateD that the L-4 was a clipped wing version of the J-3. I say no, it had the same wing as the J-3.

And while I have you, what other differences were there between the J-3 and the L-4 other than the color (khaki) and the extended green house on the L-4??

Thanks,

Bob

I recall the L4 having a full span wing. A quick Google search would bring up the specifications on both.

L-4 had the full wing. J3 V L-4 L-4 has the green house, So e wee equiped with a radio systesm that included a wind driven generator on the landing gear, along with a roll out antenna with a drag cone on the tail. The back seat is set so the person could set backwards with the map desk. The back control stick is removable. About everything else is the same...

The cabin carry thru of the wing is very similar but the 'ceiling' window is different. The side structure is very similar just the shape of the windows is different. I don't have structural drawings from which to base my statements. I am going by Paul Matt drawings and photos. What's nice about the J-2 is that it was offered in many different colors including gold with red trim. I think that would be very pretty but haven't found any 'N' numbers to support one painted that way.

Mainly I am just looking for the bracing & wing detail near the top of the windshield. I'm not building a scale masters level model, just trying to make it look a bit more scale.

Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the comments on the L-4 guys!! I didn't know that the back-seater had to sit backwards, but it makes sense.

Thanks again!

The back seat is just flat seat with a back sling so you can set facing forward or backward on it

I'll have to look for details of that, CubMan, to see if I can incorporate them. Not sure if the Sig Cub has the room to do that but it would be fun to put in. The Cub is still in the box by the way; I'm just gathering info on it. Other projects are ahead of it and I already have another Cub flying right now anyway.

I have the Sig Anniversary Cub the cabin is pretty roomy. I chose not to do a cockpit because its more of a daily flier and the its cover in Oracote/Ultracote and I left the engine details off so it isn't exactly scale. Mine is bright yellow and I am to add add Civil Air Patrol insignia at my son's request.

I went to a fly-in several years ago that had a prescribed figure 8 pattern W/ several aircraft in the air at one time. I saw several head on mid air collisions that day.

Stupidest thing I ever witnessed.

What did the other guy have to say?
