Yeah, I tried a few times to reshrink while twisting, and it kept going back after a while and wrinkling the fabric. I think a touch or rudder trip will offset it enough to not be an issue. I also have a monster for an engine in it.

Default Tail brace failure

On my SIG Cub, the tail brace uses Clevises, and they are too hard to drill and they have also snapped when trying to bend. I need something else to use, but dont know what. Is there a tail brace hardware pack out there? This is the last item I have left to complete before final balancing, everything else except the dummy engine is done. I even put in a pilots seat(though misplaced the instrument panel decal). It's not true to scale, but it looks good, and the one full body pilot I have fits it perfectly(looks like a kid with a fake mustache pretending to be a pilot). It secures the battery and charging jack/switch.

My Sig 1/4 Cub uses 2-56 spring steel clevisis with one leg cut off. Perhaps another brad will not be as hard and can be bent and drilled out to a bigger hole for attaching to the stabs. Good luck.

I picked up a Sullivan tail brace kit that uses cables. It wasn't cheap so it better work.

The Sullivan brace kit works very well. I have used it on a couple planes with excellent results including a 82" span Super Sportster. To add strength as there was no plywood inserts, I glued short lengths of aluminum tubing into the stab and fin to prevent the balsa from crushing or tearing. It held up real well.

Went through my checklist. All I have left are the tail braces, and check the balance once I finish installing the seat with the battery and switch installed. One thing not explained on the plans or the manual is the rubber banding on the landing gear, so not a clue how to connect that together. I was looking at the side profile and it needs something on that white expanse of canvas behind the cockpit, so went looking for 1 1/2" letters and they didn't have any at the LHS. Thinking of adding an N with my AMA number to the sides. I also misplaced the instrument panel, so will have to put that in whenever I locate it. I also have the decals that came with the kit somewhere, so have to find those too and add the little cub to the tail.

Cub is done. That tail brace kit worked well, and looks pretty good too.

If weather holds up like forecast for Sunday and the winds are calm, I may maiden it. All depends on if I get it balanced and tuned by then. Should balance right on the money, but you never know until its done. The Saito should purr like it did before, but I had to remove the needle to get the cowl on.

Tail brace wires I put on a 1/4 scale Spacewalker, made the attachments from aluminum and put an eye-let in them for wear protection, and used a clevis on one end for adjustment with a piece of heat shrink slid over it. For scale I like cub mans illustration and plan to do that on my 1/4 scale Super Cub.

Leroy, On the tail brace wires - are the actually functional or just for looks?

Does it matter if 1/3, 1/4, 1/5 scale or does it apply to all with tail brace wires??

Thanks

Kieth the wires and braces do function in the overall support of the tail surfaces and help prevent flutter especially the larger surfaces. Notice the wires are all around most typically on the trailing edges and some add the leading edge support also. When the real planes we model have them it's because it's part of the design and very functional.

On my 1/3 Cub they are functional. All Cub models would probably benefit from having functional wires added to them.

Charles,
How is your 1/3 Super Cub plans coming? I would really like to build one of them one of these days.
Later!!

As with the wing struts, the tail braces on the 1/5th are structural too. Really stiffens up the tail. Now that I have a nice spool of stainless cable and another kevlar one, the rest is easy to make for more bracing as I need it. Would be nice if I could find bulk threaded fittings that slip over the cables.

The super cub plans are coming along slowly. I have a couple areas that I have stepped away from to ponder over on how to best do and for building on it to keep it scale.

Big brown dropped a box at my door today. Wish it was a new plane...... But it's the shirts. I had to drop back one on teh shirts, but they are still great quality. Did this so we could have them before Christmas!!!!!. If nothing happens I will get them in the mail this Friday. I did buy a couple extra so if you want one go to the store on the cub den and order one.

Can't really see it in this picture, but I added a step behind the landing gear fairing.

Well I said before I was done, but I really wasn't, but I am now. I put the decals on, found the instrument panel, put that in, and finished the cow.

Ran up the engine yesterday, everything checks out, but too foggy today to maiden it. Really like how it came out. I may have a graphic made for the wing N number. The tail is my AMA number. The top wing I want the number to be black and white so that is stands out on the colors.
