I will always have the extra loop, just to much more secure that way. As for a full circle crimp I would think it might not work well on brass as we use it. The brass compresses very well in one direction but fear a full circle would make it weaker, near the breaking point.

Well fellas..got the throttle cable run today..saito 180 lined up good with the routing of the throttle servo cable..hiding the cable in the wall under th right window..ponder ponder..seems I stare at the build figuring it out longer than when actually glueing a pc in..figuring it out is fun..gotta solder that cable on the servo end..hope my outer tubing doesn't melt..haha

I agree, I wouldn't omit the loop back either, not with a full circle crimp on a thin wall ferrule... brass would work ok, but it would have to be annealed and have a much thicker wall... it would be a bit bulkier than the current std method, but I think I could trust it without the loop back as long as it was crimped properly.

Here's a full scale crimped ferrule... you can see how thick the wall is of the ferrule... if they can trust it on a full scale aircraft, then why not on a model... we can test that theory on your 10k project if you like .

It should be taped to prevent chaffing of the fabric.

The 10K one does not use brass for the ferrule, those are zinc coated copper oval sleeves from Vogelsang.

Well I'm dammed, those are proper oval crimp sleeves... and their example photos are showing the crimps with out the loop back... their smallest thimbles are a bit big for 1/4 scale, I tried to makes some and its a bit more than my fingers and handle... the prices on the cable and crimp sleeve are more than reasonable.

Thanks Ace, I'll bookmark that for future projects... what else have you been hiding from me... I've been to that site many times and missed those.

Tony, the 10k is a reference to Ace's 46% Pitts...

Hey, Long time since I have posted. I am looking for the dimensions of a full scale Cub spinner. If any one has those I would appreciate it. I have a guy who is willing to turn one for me. The one I use now looks like crap. I have not really found a commercial one to fit a DLE 30. If anyone knows of one, let me know. Thanks to all.

Stan, have you looked at the cub prop hubs over at truturn's site... they have several sizes and adapters to fit most engines... I have one on my OS FT160 with an18/8 prop mounted... it fits and looks just like a proper cub prop hub... call or email Amanda and she'll tell you what you need and the proper adapter... if they don't have the adapter for the DLE 30, they'll most likely make you one... or you can have them send you the blank hub washer and you can make the necessary modifications.

The one I have is the TTH-1500-B-CUB, and it fit both the Xoar and Master Airscrew Classic series 18-8 propeller's, just perfectly.

Sure... the sizes are easy to discern... the TTH-1500 is 1 1/2 " inches in diameter... the TTH-1750, is 1 3/4" inches... TTH-2500, is 2 1/2" inches.... TTH-3000, is 3" inches.... just take a measurement across the hub of your propeller you're using ... typically the 1500 works on most 1/4 scale... the 1750 and 2500 works on 33% to 40%... the 3000 is a big boy, probably pushing half scale.

I have read that the Ercoupe spinner is (almost) the same as the Cub. Go to Univar.com for the following images and maybe they can give you some dimensions also. Good luck.

On another note, Has anyone converted a Sig Anniversary Cub to a L-4 Grasshopper? There are some structural issues that I'm concerned about, especially where wood is being replaced with clear plastic. I was just wondering if anyone here has done that or knows of a build thread somewhere who could point out the pitfalls...

Thanks,

Bob

Bob, someone did a conversion here at RCU in this thread... you can try and contact the builder and find out if he had any structural concerns

Hmm I have one, but no place nearby to make a copy. If I find one I will though.

I plan to get another SIG 1/5th real soon for the Biper Cub build. Still debating the lower wing assembly, may make it one piece.

I just ordered Robart 1/5 scale Cub landing gear from Omni Models on Thursday 1/29. Scheduled arrival on Monday 2/2.

Awesome service from Omni models & great price @ $132.99 shipped.

Things are coming together. I wasn't going to go W/the Robart gear until I found this price.

W/the upgrades; Solartex covering, Top Notch scale A-65 engine, Robart gear, Dubro scale Cub wheels, SIG semi-scale tailwheel, semi scale windshield/brace details & other added scale touches, my Wingsmaker J-3 should look pretty realistic.

Now, to scrape enough $$$$ together for a Saito FA-115 to swap in place of the FA-91S, for some added vertical perfomance when I feel like it. The 91S tucks in quite nicely W/only the tips of the rocker covers protruding through the bottom of the cowl. The 115 is only 1mm taller & fits the same footprint. Either way I'll be using C&H Ignitions CDI W/methaanol for power.

Here is the "student" pilot figure I am going to use.

Evidently, she's not a star pupil judging from the expression on the "instructor's" face.
