He's one hell of a pilot with those low inverted and knife edge flybys... the stress it took to fail at the fuselage like that, especially with the struts still attached... if you look at the video just prior to the failure, during that last high speed inverted pass, then when he goes into an abrupt vertical, you can see the wings bend under the negative "G"s... you could see the negative dihedral as the wings flexed... that's probably when the fuselage was fatigued, and time stamped its demise.... he really rung it out though, didn't he

I managed to reinforce the H9 super cub blocks through one of the servo access mounting holes... you should see how I did the strut mod on the sig 1/4 cub.. it would have to be a total wing spar failure before the strut mounts would give way.

My buddy will do a few loops with power off after going over the top and some stall turns and that is about it. Any abrupt moves with a Cub like that in the video is asking for trouble. IMO save that stuff for 3D planes. I prefer to fly my Cub like a Cub.

We did have a full size Carbon Cub fly in at our field last year with the same red scheme. Good looking plane and had really good short field capabilities.
Later!!

I have to agree, they can only take that for so long. Especially the sudden snaps with the elevator. Here is another clip of the same Mitchell from Apr of last year, the crash didn't happen until towards the end of the season.

Bird, you remind me of my buddy Dan. He is a retired Air Force E-9 and lived in Japan post WWII. When he was a kid he got into a little trouble by playing hooky from school and stealing Japanese grenades and what not out of the hidden WWII tunnels and selling them to the GIs as souvenirs. Hey had to finance his hobbies some way!

First, I request admittance to the Cub Brotherhood. I am building a Sig 1/6 Cipped Wing Cub. Second, from the plans, it appears the ailerons are hinged at the top surface of the wing. Am I looking at that correctly? If so, any hints the best way to accomplish?

I have to agree as well... the guy is an exceptional pilot... that snap roll just before the spin in that last video was quite sharp... whats one of these aeroworks 1/3 scale CCubs weigh?, 30-35 lbs... the loads that go into those wing attachment points during those violent maneuvers has to be very high... I wonder if he could have prevented the structural failure if he had thoroughly inspected those areas... a lot rc pilots don't bother, until something becomes apparent.

We had a guy at our field many years ago that was as bold with his aerobatic skills, Al Unwin was his name... he lived and breathed RC, if he wrecked one, the following week he would have something different to fly and tearing the sky's up... didn't seem to phase him one way or another loosing an aircraft... and I think that mind set is what makes these guys so great, they keep pushing their flying skills and improving them at whatever the cost.

That is a 40% Cub,
Big difference in size. The maneuver that removed the wings had to be 6+ G's Advertised weight is 38-40 lbs. At 6 G's that's 240 lbs of load on those wings.
Big planes put a lot of stresses on the airframe. At $2,300 for the airframe that is an awfully expensive plane to throw around like that especially when it isn't designed for it.

I don't know where I got 1/3 scale from, but 40% just compounds the physical dynamics... 240 lbs doesn't seem like much, but after repeated hammerings, it takes its toll..

That isn't cheap btw... for just the airframe, then the damage to the engine, and radio gear... its a risk I'm not willing to take, but I'm sure he knew the risks, you have to when the wing tip is only several inches off the ground... back when we were using the AM band, you could get reflections off chain link fences... if you did a low inverted flybys like that, there was I high probability of getting a radio glitch, with no room for error... not so much of a problem today with the 2.4gig radios, but the old adage, if you tease Murphy long enough, he's gong to reach out and smack you one.

Some motivation for getting my 1/3 scale super cub plans done. Did some swapping over the weekend and picked up a brisson 6.4 Now just need some landing gear wheels and tail gear along with servos and covering.

I have been officially called a Cub man by my friend. With one Cub completed, and a second one bashed into a Bi Plane, when I told him I was going to modify a Cub into a low wing mono plane, he said that I have become Cub Crazy, and all I need now is a J3. I started the covering on my Biper, need to modify the door so it folds up as a bifold(perfect a bifold door on a bi plane cub), and use magnets to hold it up to the wing. It still looks like a Cub, but has an extra set of wings. I think it looks pretty damned good too.

There is (or was) a full size Cub that was converted to a mid wing configuration for air shows. Jack Poage built and flew his "Midwing Special" at air shows in the mid Atlantic. After he sold it, the new owner continued to do air shows. I Haven't seen it for several years so I don't know it's current status.
Just another option that could be "scale", but not a standard Cub

Yeah doesn't really look like a Cub, mine will, more like one that pulled up from a dive too hard and pulled the wing to the bottom of the fuse. LOL In place of the cabin roof having the wing supports, just going to round off the top of the cabin. It will keep the Cub tail, and structure, and clipped wings. I think it will be unique and still look like a Cub.

Default Back in the cub bussines

I just returned from a large swap meet with a well cured framed up sig 1/4 clipped wing and a NIB 1/3 Trillium Balsa J3 cub kit.
This will be my 3rd sig CW but I don't know anything about the Trillium Balsa kit. The wood appears to be all hand cut and is of great quality. The guy who sold it to me said he purchased the kit in 1986 and kept it in a closet. Its really clean. Anybody know anything about Trillium Balsa J3?
