FAA didn't exist until 8/23/1958. The Civil Aeronautics Authority was formed by the Civil Aeronautics Authority of 1938. It all started with the NACA started in 1915, follow and by the Airmail Act of 1925, and then the Air Commerce Act of 1926 (See the old movie The Great Waldo Pepper to see the how and why it was created) The Bureau of Air Commerce came along out of the Commerce Department's Aeronautics Branch in 1934 due to the Airmail Scandal of 1934. Finally the independent Civil Aeronautics Authority came alone in the second half of 1938. I'll skip everything after 1938 you can look that up if you haven't been bored to tears already.

Wow... I'm at home recovering from a broken femur and off work on FMLA due to my injury. I'm pretty bored. But that may have just introduced a whole new level of boredom previously thought to be unattainable!

Given you're in OKC would it be safe to assume you are or were a Fed?

Actually no I'm just a history and an aviation lover. I do work in IT for a VA Contractor as a remote employee. This particular airplane project I am working on is somewhat of an obsession. Prior to this job I was strictly a private sector employee.

Hello, I wanted to post a few pics of my Hangar 9 1/4 scale and Eflite Carbon Z Cub now that I've got my cool bush tires and mods done. The tires and suspension system are from PR Bushwheels out of Eagle River, Alaska. They are precision and scale and very nice. They have a website where you can check them out at www.prbushwheels.com

The 1/4 scale has a Tacon 110 swinging a 17x8 Xoar sport laminated prop with a CC 85 amp esc on 9S. On a 5000 mAh battery I get eight minutes of scale flying with 40% of battery remaining, so I could fly a lot longer if needed for a go-around. The plane weighs just over 18 lbs AUW and lands like a dream with the tires/shocks from PR.

Wow jvance. Nice cubs! I would like to do one of these but cant decide on gas or electric. What is the cost of the motor, esc and one battery for a 1/4 scale like this?

It can be a bit spendy, and if you're new to electric, this might not be your best first electric model. Tacon 110 motors are entry level (budget) at $55, the Castle Creations 85 amp esc is about $140 and batteries are anywhere from $150 on up for a single 4S and 5S combo that makes a 9S total.

Hi Guys and Gals,

This is Steve with PR Bushwheels, and yes I have several cubs! Currently there are a couple of builds and rebuilds going on because everything does have an expiration date!!! LOL I have been working on a 1/4 scale Balsa USA J-3 with some modifications, such as flaps, LED lights, and so on.. with a DLE30 on it. Still a ways out on that one. The pride of the fleet has to be my AK State Trooper 1/4 scale Sig that has been completely customized to a PA-18 done after N7059 which I have had the pleasure of flying in with the troopers. I will throw down a few photos here if I can.

Would love to be a member of the "Brotherhood" as you guessed it, Robert and I at PR Bushwheels make custom part for scale cubs. Check us out if you would like to see what we have prbushwheels.com

JVance has a couple of sets and is a great friend with which we love to fly with along with our local club...the Frontier Fun Flyers based here in Anchorage Alaska!

If you have any questions about our products or the Alaska experience please don't hesitate to give me a shout - [email protected]

Thats not too bad price wise. Just looking for ideas for the future. I upgraded my super cub set up and spent about the same on a size 46 motor... It is doable for me. Thanks for the info.

Feel free to post a video or two of your flights with these cubs. I am very interested in seeing them in the air!

Heres a few pics of my hobbyzone super cub getting souped up. I gutted it except for the servos.

A previous post I mentioned the motor was a size 46... got confused with my cessna... this is a park size 480 with a 30 amp RCTimer esc, 3a bec. Im using a Taranis Plus TX with a FLVSS LIPO voltage sensor... I have voice alerts set up for receiver voltage, RSSI strength, low individual cell and low flight pack voltage. i am using 3s 35c 1500mah battery.
The last pic shows the cub with 3 inch dubro wheels... they look like bush wheels and I should be able to land in the grass without doing ground loops every time. This poor cub took a beating... I learned to fly with it. It has more glue on it than when I bought it, but still has all the original parts minus the motor and electronics.
Still waiting for a nice day to maiden this with the upgrades.

The drawback of large electrics are the batteries. They can get very pricey when you go above 4S, which makes glow fuel seem cheap. You also need a good charger or 3 to be able to keep them at peak condition. I finally broke down and bought a pair of 8000 mah 3S for my Twin Otter so it could fly for more than a few minutes. That cost me over $200 for the pair at a swap meet. I can now fly for about 10 minutes or more with them, but they each take over an hour or two to charge back up after each flight.

I have a Hacker motor and ESC that takes a minimum 4S to even turn on, so I pair the two 8000 mah 3S to make a 6S and it spins the Hacker just fine, so they are dual purpose. They are heavy though so thats another thing to consider going electric. Weigh the options with weight, compare the weight of the glow/gas motor you would use to the electric can, ESC and batteries. Just remember that unlike glow, you balance the plane with the batteries in, where glow you balance with an empty tank. Electrics Cubs are neat, but you wont be able to fly for nearly as long as one with a popper in it.

I just found a source for methanol for $5 a gallon in gallon jugs. I should be able to mix 10% methanol/lube mix for under $8 a gallon.

If I wanted to handle a drum, it would be just under $3 a gallon for the methanol.

I tried electric for a bit, but could not handle the silence and did not care for the battery expense especially being as I throw them away annually.

Guys, I don't know about anyone else but after fifty years of glow, I'm tired of the mess and up keep from it! With gas and electric being what it is and the comparable prices between them, I cant help but throw rocks at glow! Nothing against you T-150 if you like it. I just hate the constant clean up and maintainance caused by glow. It was fun while it lasted. I do remember the nicad and 05 can brushed motors that bearly got to 'any' altitude in a glider no less, by the time they ran out of power but these new electrics aren't gran dad's electrics! They are 'ZIPPITY DOOOOO DAAAA' some kinda powerful! With the cost difference, you cant go wrong!
BTW I have about forty glows I would like to sell. Anyone interested?????????? They are reasonably priced. I have a aafutaba YS 120 that will suck up 24 ounces in about 9 minutes!!!!!!!!!! Not bad if you get fuel for 8 bucks a gallon. I remember paying 10 for K&B fuel and 6 for FOX and others and that was expensive. FOX, talk about a slobbering mess!!! 20 percent oil!
Just relatin a bit of history.

I abandoned glow 5 years ago because of the smell, oily airframes, and cost. That's when I tried electric, but ultimately went gas and have not looked back.

Oh, ok... I've searched google and the only thing that comes up are certificates of Airworthiness issued by the CAA in the UK... maybe try contacting an aircraft museum and see if they have any information on it.

Nothings better than the sound of a gas 4 stroke engine... I will still use glow engines, but 4 strokes only.... the gas 4 strokes are a bit cleaner, but I run 20:1, so I still get some splatter on the under side of the fuse... its just part of the joys of RC.

Hey Ace here's the Registration certificate as well

http://www.john2031.com/piper_tg-8_g...gistration.pdf

***EDIT***

The hyperlink keeps going back to the RCUniverse forums for some reason, so I attached the pdf files... the one file "registration.pdf", has some missing information ( model # ) at some point in its history, "its a historical document"... it looks different than the other reg pdf.

FlyerInOKC... Ace gets all the credit !!

John M,

I agree about the sound of a four stroke... that sound just belongs... what size four stroke gas would a typical 1/4 scale cub need and a ball park price? Is it a bigger investment up front?

In my AW 1/4 scale cub I used the OS 40cc gas four stroke and it was great, very scale and plenty of power.

What Tony said ... I've got the same engine... I also like the sound of that New Gaui F-50cc, basically the same dimensions as the OS GF40, but 10cc bigger displacement, but a bit spendy at $999.. the OS GF40 is $799 from tower hobbies, but with the right coupon code you can save 100-120 bucks on it.

First of all thanks to everyone who found CAA registration and Airworthiness certificates. Looking at them all the oldest is Robert's but much to my surprise none of them match what I am looking for. Attached are two photos that according to SDASM were taken in 1938 at the Ryan Aeronautical Company plant. On the left side of the apron you will see the certificate I have been searching in a somewhat poor resolution. Why is always something that looks so simple is so hard to find?
