You ave to admit seeing a J3 Cub with a radial in the nose does have a certain amount of WOW factor. Here is a closer look at the nose.

They are a rare variant unlike the Continental powered Cubs. The drawback is a radial usually cost more to maintain then a flat horizontal. Still it wasn't the first Cub to sport a radial there was the Taylor E-2. The J3P looks similar to the American Eaglet 230 and the Rearwin Junior.

If anyone is interested in a set of Tundra/Bush wheels let me know. I have two pair for sale. For whatever reason that I am not even clear on I ordered 4 pair. I guess my thought process was they were such a pain in the ass to get that I'd order extras in case anyone else wanted a set. I have two more pair to get rid of. Here they are:
http://www.topmodelcz.cz/index.php?&...detail&id=6353
They're 200mm (~8")
$75/pair+shipping
If you're interested PM me and we can work out the details.

Randy

Default three cylinder cubs

Piper made about 30 J3 Cubs with two different radial engines. The engines were a Zekley and Lenape Papoose. Only one is left flying and it was a conversion back to a J3P. I believe it is in Oregon. I saw it at Oshkosh a few years ago.
I have a 1/3 scale J3 with a Saito 450 three cylinder radial. The Saito looks almost like the LaNap Papoose.

I have attached two pictures. I haven't gotten around to making a cowl yet.

Did you notice the windscreen on that J-3 with the radial in post 3651? Is that oil from the top cylinder, I wonder??? That would be annoying to fly with.... Maybe it's just the morning dew....

I wonder how much HP that radial generated. Does anyone know???

The Lenape Papoose was 50 HP.

Thanks! I wonder what was the attraction for a 3-cylinder radial when the stock 4-cylinder engine produced 65HP... Did miss some part of an explanation back there???

Thanks,

Bob

What I have read is the 50 HP radial performed almost as well as the 65 but the 65 was smoother.

I have read nothing about the cost of the engines. Maybe price was an attraction for the radial.

Some original cubs were powered with a flat four of 40 HP.

I think it's water Bob, look at the wing cuffs and leading edge. Although it looks like bugs too on the w-shield,but no bug parts on the prop or cowl to indicate that!

The radials have more torque per HP, so it could swing the same size prop and pitch as the higher HP lower torque flat 4 with equal authority.

Thanks for that info, guys. I don't know much about Radials power, and Bigbird3, I think you're right too about the windshield.

I have a 14X4 on my 1/5th Cub but all I could find was the Master Airscrew K series glass filled nylon. Can anyone recommend a good scale looking wood prop in 14X4?

Try a Xoar, but be forewarned... they're pricey. I seem to have noticed a nice difference when using them, though

Thanks Bob! I have been looking at the Xoar props and the price doesn't scare me off. I was just wondering if there was a prop with a better scale appearance.

I don't see them on the Tower Web Page but Zoar has a number of classic looking designs.

PJWWI-Lance - http://www.xoarintl.com/rc-propeller...s-I-Propeller/

PJWWI-Sabre - http://www.xoarintl.com/rc-propeller...s-I-Propeller/

PJWWI-Scimitar - http://www.xoarintl.com/rc-propeller...s-I-Propeller/

Falcon has some nice props but most seem to be in larger sizes. - http://www.justmodelprops.com/produc...ian-two-blade/

How about the Falcon civilian style... looks good, but I don't know how they perform... I'm going to use one of those Xoar PJD laminated propellers and round off the tips, then paint and add the brass armor, but I think I'll use it for display purposes only.
